    Hi,
I frequently access a popular website which will not respond properly if you are using a pop up blocker. I have accessed it many times using my AOL browser, and also with an older version of Internet Explorer using dialup
    service.
Recently I added Verizon DSL, which gives you a "customized" Internet
Explorer 6.0 SP1 browser. It seems to work OK with normal browsing. But,
when I try it on the "pop up sensitive" website, the website balks and
posts a notice that " a pop up blocker has been detected ".
My AOL dialup still works fine. When I try the IE using dialup, it also
causes the same pop up problem as with DSL. So I am assuming there
is something going on with the new IE browser. I have checked the security settings on the IE browser, and actually changed them to " low" , but it didnt help.
Do you have any idea of what the problem with the new browser is,
and how I get it to work like my old version did?
    Thanks!!

    Pop up issue

    Hi,

Sorry, I am running Windows 98. Also, there is no toggle or any
sign of a pop up blocking option on the EI toolbar settings.

    Thanks,

Hopefully someone will have a clue on this but I don't and can't search up anything that looks likely.

One thing you might want to try is holding down the crtl key when going to a site and if that doesn't help, try holding down the shift key. Most popup blockers use that as a one-time 'allow popups' do it will at least confirm you are seeing a popup blocker.

Also, and I know it seems non-related, but the cleanup routine below is one I always used on 9X machines that started giving strange, one-off problems. It cured an amazing number of them and at worst speeded the PC up a little.

    General clean-up instructions for Win95/98/ME
    • Open a browser window and dump all TIF (temporary internet files) and cookies. Close.
    • Open windows explorer and
.. delete the contents of all temp folders
.. delete any files in c:\ with a name filennnn.chk (where nnnn is any number so file0001.chk, file1034.chk, etc)
    • verify that you have fewer than 500 files & folders directly under c:\. If you are close to that number, remove or move some files.
    • empty the recycle bin
    • boot to DOS
    • from the command prompt do the following
.. scanreg /fix <ENTER> (press the ENTER key)
      .. scanreg /opt <ENTER>
****note that 95 does not have scanreg.exe but a copy from 98 or ME will run fine if you can get one
      .. scandisk c:\ /nosave /autofix /surface <ENTER>
.. Win /D:M (forces a safe mode windows start)
    • Run another scandisk (start~programs~accessories~system tools) and check for a standard scan and to fix all errors found. The DOS scan couldn't check for long file name issues.
    • Run a defrag
    • Reboot to normal Windows.

mechanic--Certainly seems like you have a popup blocker that is active on IE.
Can you ask Verizon? Nowadays many toolbars, ISP browsers "give" you a free popup blocker. Usually there is a way to turn it off.
What happens if you just click off that message?

    Pop up blocking removed, finally.

    Hi,
As Welshjim suggested, I contacted a support manager at Verizon. They had never heard of the problem. They did however, suggest un-installing the Verizon software I used to set up the DSL at the beginning.
After removing the Verizon components the browser is back to normal and the pop ups appear as usual. If I am going to have some kind of blocking program, I would at least like to have control over it.
I appreciate all the suggestions. Problem solved.
    Thanks!!!

mechanic--Thanks for posting back. Glad you got the problem solved. Sounds like Verizon's "customization" installs a popup blocker.
    Good info for others.
