The maker of ModemMAX Internet Connection Optimizer says it will help you surf the Internet at Blazing Speeds in seconds without the expense of additional hardware. I tried this product and didn't see any improvement in my Internet speed. Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations on Internet Connection Optimizers?

    Thanks,
    Bob

Yes. Generally speaking they seem not to work; in fact, they often appear to impair performance.

I agree. As I found the same to be true.

I have found that most Internet slowdowns are not machine related anyway.

No software will fix all of the many variables involved such as distance from the nearest office, Condition of lines involved etc.

No matter what you do on your machine if the Telco ( or Cable ) lines are not up to par your connection won't be either.

    For example;

If your Modem is capable of 56k ( 53.3 max ) and the ISP is only capable of 33.6 then that is all you will get.

Or if the Internet itself is heavily loaded you may not get 53.3.

And the above also applys to Cable Internet. And I guess to some extent to DSL. But I am not sure about DSL as I have never used it.

I have tweakmaster pro ver 1.70 build 250. I haven't found that it speeds up anything. I have tried all the optomization strategies and checked with the several ping services and have seen no difference. I use it to set my computer clock now.

Billy Bob is absolutely right...and remember, if it sounds too good to be true.....

I'm about to change to DSL which will cost about 12 dollars more than I'm paying now.

I have tested it with 'virgin' installs of ALL Windows versions.

It increased my ADSL speed from over 400% in Windows 95 to around 110% in Windows XP.

But if it doesn't work for you, then don't buy it. That's why all our software has a trial version: Try before you Buy!

Arie..Sorry if I gored your ox on this one.:)

I'll try it again when I switch to DSL. Maybe a better report then?

At any rate, Bobemartin...The thing about modems:

I have a 3Com 56K External USB Business Modem Motengater.

I sign on every time at 45333, The ping service says it is about 38000.

All this has very little to do with the speed you can actually download at. It mostly depends on how busy the visited site is in terms of number of downloads going on at the time you are trying. More importantly it is as Billy Bob said. The quality of connections between your house and the dial exchange. If the road is full of pot holes, you can't get there as fast.

I had no intentions of even implying that the software in question was bad. Because it is just like any other software. Good for some not so good for others. Works for some but not for others.

But, my point which Bmoore1129 picked up on very well is that software will not fix any problems downstream of the plug where the modem plugs into the phone line.

Many times the machine ( or software on same ) gets the blame for ISP problems when the same does not even begin to be the problem.

I had many problems with various ISPs and even with using TweakMaster until I finally hooked up with Earthlink/Mindspring. Then I needed no tweaking at all.

And also replacing the '40s wiring in the house helped TREMENDOUSLY.

With Worldnet, half of the time I could not get to this site at all. Or my replys would not show up till the next day. But I can qaureentee you that it was not my machine or this site that was the problem.

Going to Earthlink did away with all of that nonsense.

Almost constant connection of 50k. and file downloads of 5.5 or better. Web pages at 7-8.

In fact other than actual file downloading and high graphic content web pages ( my own web site being one ) the Internet in general was darn near as fast as my Cable Internet.

I got good results from using an initilization string. Connection speed always showed 115,200 and if traffic wasn't bad things went much faster. But I have to agree with BillyBob. Age of conductors and ISP will make a world of difference.

Here is one for dial-up that does work http://www.arteraturbo.com/ Its works by "caching" frequently visited sites on their own servers.

Two problems with it, puts a huge load on the system - 48MB on XP (uses it's own browser) and bypasses security apps - I had bunch of **** land on my desktop for instance.

    Took it off.

    Regards - Charles
