icecold--Presume you are talking about the modem's init string. What is the extra setting?
My guess is that the 115,000 is the speed within your PC, not from the net to the PC . The 40000 is probably the new actual download speed from the net as the result of the new init string. Tell us more about the disconnections. Did they occur after a certain number of minutes? What were you doing at the time?
Have you talked to your ISP? Perhaps they can suggest a better init string.

icecold--I am not familiar with a PCI modem. I guess you know each modem could use initialization strings specific to it. So I do not know if you have used the right one.
Here is a site listing init strings for a large number of modems, but I do not see PCI on the list
    http://www.modemhelp.org/inits/
Did you get a manual with your modem?
Can you get any tech support from PCI?
I also have never used a Host Accelerated Modem (HaM) , so I hope someone more knowledgeable can join in.

icecold--Glad to hear you got things resolved. Sorry I could not be more help. Sounds like you were way ahead of us, all by yourself. :) I now see that a PCI modem refers to one on a PCI card, not a brand.
