Not strictly IE but.. I have a Sony 500MHz P3 with 256RAM and internal cable modem. About once or twice a day while surfing using IE, Netscape or aol, the access is lost. The light on the modem stays green. The only way to recover is to shut down and restart the computer. But when I do this the computer will not shut down. It gets to the 'WINDOWS98 is shutting down' message and hangs. If I CTR/ALT/DEL it will start up again, and the internet is again accessible. If I want to force a shutdown by using the power button it then does a Scandisk when it re-starts. Altogether a pain. This is a relatively new problem and the only program I have loaded recently has been the update (Beta version) of Morpheus. Can anyone who has seen this type of problem help me out please? Grateful for any assistance.

Since you say that the problem is not specific to a particular browser, I am going to move this to the Other Internet Software Forum.

I don't know for sure if it is causing the problem or not, but the new (beta) version of Morpheus does behave much differently. The old version would search up to 100 hits then stop or until it timed out when it found all it could find (if any). The new version is contantly requesting and sending information because of the change in the peer-to-peer technology. Here's some quotes from the Morpheus website:

    • Why don't searches stop?
With Morpheus Preview Edition, searches continue endlessly. Each time someone is connected to the network, their server is scanned for files. As long as there are people connecting to the network, the search will go on.

Why is it using bandwidth even though I'm not transferring files?
In a peer to peer network like the Morpheus network your computer is acting as a "peering point" for other machines in the network. This means that your computer is constantly receiving and transmitting search requests, pings and pongs, requests to connect to other machines in the network, etc.
Keep in mind that this is still a beta product and could cause unexpected results such as yours. I'd shutdown and/or uninstall Morpheus and see if your problems go away. If they do, you know what the culprit is.

I don't use Morpheus so I don't have a solution for your specific problem but I do have a couple of suggestions that you might want to try in an effort to resolve your rebooting issue.

When this occurs have you tried logging off your system before attempting a reboot? I have a Win95 system that likes to lock up like this and I discovered that if I first log off, click cancel when it tries to log back in, and then click Start, Restart it will do it without requiring a forced shutdown.

Also, in Windows 98 you can stop Scan Disk from running after a forced shutdown by clicking on Start, Run and typing in MSCONFIG and then clicking OK.

Once MSCONFIG is running click on the Advanced button and place a check mark in "Disable Scan Disk after a bad shutdown ". If nothing better this should at least speed the rebooting process up.

    HTH :)
