I have 3 PCs linked thru phoneline network adapters, with a Linksys HPRO200 Phoneline dsl router (IP address: 192.168.1.1 / 255.255.255.0) for WAN interfacing. My ISP provided a Visionnet 200ER Ethernet modem/router (IP address: 10.0.0.2 / 255.0.0.0) for connecting to their DSL internet service. Can I access the internet using only the phoneline router, or do I also need the modem/router? If so, how would I connect and configure the 2 routers so that they communicate and provide internet access?

Interesting. I wonder exactly what your ISP is trying to do here. My guess would be to stop folks from having mutiple PCs and only paying for one connection. I found one ISP advertising that they provide you with a Visionnet 200ER and they went on to say you would need a hub for multiple PCs. Which would mean they would see all your PCs and would have to provide an IP address for each (and probably charge for each as well).

If the Visionnet 200ER is optional, say "no thanks ". If manditory, just hook your present router/switch to the PC port on the Visionnet 200ER and unless the ISP has done something really sneaky and difficult, you should be fine. Your local PCs would continue to use their 192.168.1.x addresses and 192.168.1.1 as their gateway and your ISP would continue to only see the one device at your location while you could connect to the internet with the same maximum of 253 PCs if you wanted to.

The WAN/Internet side of your router should get proper addressing information from the modem/router and you shouldn't have to do anything.

If you do have to get the Visionnet 200ER and what I suggest doesn't work, post back. We can do a little digging to find out what they have done and modify your setup so you can continue to work as usual. But not possible to dig around until you have the hookup to play with.

Many Thanks for your advice. Since I had to wait a week for DSL service to be installed, I tried to preconfigure the modem and router setups thru my dialup connection (Patience? I got your patience, right here!). Lesson learned: Don't do THAT again. Once the service was installed I reset both devices to factory defaults, entered config. info into the modem and everything worked as advertised. Now I'll have to find something else to fuss and fume about.

Well- if everything works in the end, you gotta declare a success. So, 'You are a success'. :D
