hi. does anyone know how Exchange server deals with sending internal office e-mails i.e. from one staff member to another?

we're considering purchasing exchange server 2003 and internal e-mails are one of the main reasons for purchasing.

    cheers

Basically your internal users are added to a user list and Exchange will use that as the fastest route for sending the internal stuff.

But the whole process is pretty well transparent to the users and they will get internet and intranet email in the exact same fashion.

If you are on a domain, it's easy to set things so any new Exchange account can automatically add the same user to the domain.

Other really nice things about the GAL (global address list - the term for your intranet accounts list) is the other information that can be stored there like office/mobile/pager numers, assistant's name and phone, and other good stuff. And easy to give users a URL link to their account so they can update info as needed.

We are still running on 2K servers and have a fairly large group of users (over 6000 names before you go from beginning letter A to B for the username). I'm in North Carolina and my primary exchange server is in New York. Good performance but if it should fail or become unavailable, I'll be rolled over to one in Virginia or Kentucky and not notice a problem usually.

thanks for the info Newt. We've downloaded the trial version from MS so we're going to give it a shot.

What's the setup like? we're planning on installing it on our webserver (win2k box with NAT and e-mail routing on).

I take it we'll be able to get rid of our e-mail routing software if we use Exchange?

cheers for the info though guys
