I have an Acer Aspire 5732Z laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit and there is a problem with the administrator account that has me baffled.

Sometimes the login is straightforward and the laptop runs fine, but sometimes the password is not accepted and several attempts have to be made to login. I am not able to change the administrator password in User Accounts and the laptop refuses to run the password backup software and make a password reset flash drive.

I have tried to use password cracking software, linux based, and that just does not run, and the laptop will not boot from any of the password cracking disks I have that I have used in the past.

According to the owner, this login problem has never happened in the past. I did think that it may have been a keyboard problem, but I have not been able to fault it. I have run a system file check and that was faultless, and checkdisk did not find any faults either.

I have just tried to restart the laptop from hibernation, and there is an error message,
    Status: 0xc0000411
Info: A fatal error occurred processing the restoration data
    File: \hyberfil.sys
Any information that was not saved before the computer went into hibernation will be lost
Press enter to continue. I did and at login, it would not accept the password.

I put in one of my password cracking disks and rebooted. Password accepted. Windows running fine, but I am still not sure what the next check should be. I will make a complete system backup and perhaps have to reload Windows.

    All advice gratefully accepted.

I'd imagine that everyone's gut reaction is either the caps lock is on or type-o's when entering the password... And I'd guess you've ruled that out.

I would hook up and external keyboard and see how that does.

Profiles can and do get corrupted. Super safe thing to do ASAP is to create another account and make it part of the admin group.

Thanks Steve, I had thought I might create another account. The only real change I made was to switch off the Guest account - the owner asked me to do this! I have backed up all the Documents and Mail, and will also do a full backup before I do anything else, just in case.

I will let you know how I get on. Thanks again.

It worked a treat, Steve. Thanks.

I was able to log in and as Administrator I set up another Administrator account and then was able to delete the password from the dodgy account and create a new one that works fine. I suppose it is possible that the password file had some kind of fault, because all the other user data and programs are still there so I don't know if the profile was damaged.

    Thanks again for your advice.a

PS I have a friend who also tried to make a password reset flash drive, but the program would not work for him either. I suppose that will have to be another thread! Just thought you might like to know!!
