Resolved Intermittent Crashing - Power Light Still On

    My windows 7 computer has been crashing all day. It's only just started doing this today. It's a hardware problem, actually, because it's been crashing off of an Ubuntu live-usb, but I post here because I'm using Windows diagnostic tools (a free Everest trial, specifically) and because I've heard good things about this forum.

    Here is what happens. When I'm browsing the internet, gaming, or whatever, my computers screen will suddenly go blank. The monitor detects no signal, and my keyboard and mouse cease to work (caps lock doesn't make the keyboard light up, and the LED's on my mouse go out.) However, the speaker lights and power light are still on. Holding down the power button does NOT turn the computer off - I have to physically take out the power cord.

    It seems like it might be a heat related issue, because if I let it sit it'll go a while without crashing but if I boot it right after a crash it'll be much more likely to crash again. My guess is that it's somewhere in the realm of heat, power supply, or motherboard issues. I'd like the experts to take a look at my Everest logs and supply an educated guess.

    Sorry about the code tags. I come from a forum where it's customary to put long text in code blocks so it doesn't take too much space.

    I dearly hope it's a PSU issue - that'd be much easier to replace. With this other vote of confidence confirming my suspicions, I might go buy a stronger PSU (probably a 550W or something) and try it out.

    Also, it was left on for multiple hours not in use and did not crash in the interiem - perhaps another clue that it's a power issue, if it's not crashing when hibernating.

    With the disparity in the +2.5 v reading the PSU is clearly not functioning as it should. When hibernating the power usage is minimal and the majority of the computer is effectively powered down.

    Just installed a 550W power supply. I'm still sitting at

    +2.5 V 1.15 V

    like before. I'm not going to return the power supply because it was a good price for the upgrade (and because it's monster fan is keeping my motherboard ten degrees cooler :)) but I'm still curious about this value. For now I'm going to just use the comp as normal and see if this fixed the crashing despite the anomalous +2.5V value sticking around.

    Just reporting that the comp has been running all day without a single crash. Despite the weird low CPU voltage, I'm still willing to call this fixed as long as it doesn't relapse. So if you're finding this thread and suffering similar symptoms, consider switching PSU's, particularly if your current one is weak (I went from a generic 300W to a BFG Tech 550W.)

    It's strange that the voltage remains low, but good news that you have not experienced a crash so far. :)]

    I suggest you cross check the voltages, maybe in BIOS and certainly with SIW - Hardware > Sensors. This is a better program than the free version of Everest IMO.

    I've been asked by an admin to "conclude this thread ". I assume that means ticking the "mark this problem as solved" button? Seeing as my computer has not crashed ever since I installed the new PSU, we can call the problem solved.
