    Hello;

    I'm having an intermediate problem which only happens occasionally on start-up, but is getting very annoying and happening more frequently now.

    When I boot the computer and enter Win98, it somtimes comes up with a message box stating an illegial operation has occured in the System Tray and will be shut down, or somthing like that. Then, I click on Close, (to close the Box), and a few seconds later, another Dialog box comes up and states, " explorer has caused an illegal opperation, and will be shut down, or something like that. I then click on the close icon and wait for win98 to finish and the Hardrive to stop.

    The funny thing is that the background .bmp file works ok, and the program Icons still appear on my desk top, but the system tray does not finish loading all the start-up programs.

    I then click on the Start/Shut Down button and when the computer states, " it is ok to turn off your computer message, I then hit the reboot button on my Computer case and it boots back into windows, and everything comes up allright after that. Can anyone tell me whats going on. Thanks in advance and God's Speed...

    Try running System File Checker - Start > Run > type in sfc

    “but the system tray does not finish loading all the start-up programs.â€

    Do you have just one which fails to make it or more than one? If just one let us know what it is. If more than one then it may be the last to load or the first of those not loaded which is causing the problem and you'll need to employ selective startup to 'home in' on the culprit.
