I know the keyboard works fine because it works on my computer upstairs and when I brought the keyboard from the upstairs computer to the downstairs machine, that one did not work either.

Okay, so here is what I worked out... the keyboard is plugged into the proper "keyboard" connection, the purple one;) (sorry, i do not know the proper lingo yet:rolleyes: )
When I start the computer up, i can get into DOS(i think) by pressing delete. I can also turn the caps lock button on and off and the little light works- so therefore the keyboard does work at that point.

BUT!!! As soon as Windows XP starts up it no longer works!! After the COMPAC thing comes up I am able to use the keyboard, then the screen goes black for a moment or two, then as soon as the WINDOWS XP sign thing comes up the keyboard quits working.

I tried troubleshooter, which told me to uninstall the keyboard then reinstall it. That did not work.

Does anyone know what the problem could be?

    Hello ealdc,
    welcome to Windows BBS ... :) ... !

Since you state your experience as beginner, I would like to make a comment on:

That is not DOS. On most computers, pressing DEL during startup will get you into BIOS. BIOS is the chip on the motherboard which controls the basic functions of the computer. As a beginner, not even knowing what it is, you don't want to go there!

Regrettably, I have no solution to your problem but I thought that posting this would possibly prevent you from making it worse ... ;) ... !

Christer, thanks for the tip. I know i could mess up the computer if I don't know what i am doing. I only do things if i know what to do, so i wouldn't go changing things without help from someone.

Actually, the computer is old but i had a friend of my mom's add some things and change some things and now the computer is pretty much new. The keyboard hasn't worked since we brought the computer home, so we gave it back to him along with the keyboard and it all worked at his house. He is going to come over when he isn't busy but i was hoping to fix it sooner, if i can.

    The keyboard is brand new.
