Currently running WIN ME OS. If I install XP Professional, do I have to first uninstall WIN ME? If If do uninstall WIN ME do I loose all my programs?

Please sugggest best procedure to install XP over existing WIN ME without loosing existing programs, if this is possible.

Please reply via email to belkin1@msn.com.

    Many thanks in advance,

It may depend somewhat on why you wish to go with XP.

If just to upgrade, overtop may be OK. Should not lose anything. May have to re-install a few things.

If you wish to upgrade to fix problems NO. Do a clean install. Yes. All may be lost. Depends on your HD setup. If all on one drive all will be lost. If you have more than one partition then only what was on the C: drive will be lost but a re-install of other things will be required.

I just put XP Pro overtop of 98SE. I have no problems. But I had been running 98SE for over 6 months with no problems whatsoever.

    Bottom line(s)

    User choice.
    It can work.
But it can also cause more problems.
The most recommended choice is a clean install.

    PS.
These questions do not get e-mail answers from me.

This week I threw Windows ME out the window and made a clean install of Windows XP Pro. I never even considered an upgrade of ME. A clean install is more cumbersome but I believe it will reward You.

I only wonder why I didn´t find the time to do this sooner ......

    One thing I forgot.

I had the original HD still availabe as a very soild backup if anything went wrong. So I could gamble a little.
