So I bought a Laptop with Vista preinstalled (horrible... slowness...) and want to add XP.

I have shrink the partition but when I installed XP the first time, it installed it on D: so that when i was in both Vista and XP it would put XP as D:.

What I want is to have it like this:

    In Vista:
    C: - Vista
    D: - XP

    In XP:
    C: - XP
    D: - Vista

How can I go about doing this?

I have no idea if what you want to achieve is indeed achievable - I have no significant experience of Vista let alone dual booting with XP. I offered the URL as one which had proved to be useful to others on the Board in the past.

In the dual booting of XP and 98 which I did for many years the scenario you want was standard - however Vista is a different animal. At one time I was quad booting without any issues.

When installing software the default location may well be C:\ but there is generally an option to specify where you want to install the basic program and the Windows OS into which you are booted at the time should be recognised for the installation of system files.

I have edited your thread title to be more specific.

That's not going to work, so forget it.

There shouldn't be any "program that has been programed to run on C:" unless you use some real arcane software.

Oh ok. Well There was already the problem when I was installing drivers where it extracted it to the Vista Partition but i'm sure it would only be file extracting software that would do that...

    Thanks for replying.

Yea, MS updates also do this, they use the drive with the largest free space...
