Are you upgrading or doing a clean install?

How far does the install get? Is it the first restart or does it complete?

Try installing XP with the bare minimum hardware. You do not need modem, printer, scanner, webcam, sound card, other PCI cards so disconnect/remove them from inside the computer.

Obviously one of them is not being recognised by the XP installation.

Once you are successful in installing XP, then add one component at a time starting with those rremoved from inside. Then add external devices.

Rebooting after adding a device will show you if XP has recognised it by booting to the Desktop. When it fails to do so you know the last item added is the problem.

Thanks. I found that my printer & scanner is not compatible with xp. Does this mean if I install xp I'll have to get a new scanner & printer?

No not necessarily. Could be but most times it only means there is no "CERTIFIED" Xp driver.

Usually but not always if there is no driver for XP look for one that is for Win2K. That should work.

Does this mean you got thru the install?

    Hello osofat,

First, go to the web sites for your hardware and see if they have updated drivers for XP. If not, new equipment.

    Regards - Charles

My experience has been in line with comments by "mflynn ". Usually, Windows 2000 drivers work in XP, some times with a bit of coaxing and trial & error.

    Hi osofat

All of us have been where you are in one way or another. Todays hardware/software becomes obsolete on the drive home from BestBuy. As much as we try to keep the old going, cost become questionable. But all is not lost on your investment in XP/OS. Go to this article written by Fred Langa . It is a low cost consideration to utilize your current expense. Is this a solution for everyone, no... but it may work for you.
