Hi dolphin - and Welcome to the Board :)

You should have no problems installing XP (Pro I guess) over your Win 2k installation. Buy an Upgrade to Win XP Pro and pop it in your CD drive - better to boot from the CD, but you can let it autorun in W2k. You may have to update a few drivers if you have any specific hardware that Win XP does not recognise or loads it's own version, eg video drivers. Download these from the manufacturer's web site before you start the upgrade, but most W2k drivers work OK under XP.
Nobody can guarantee that problems will not arise, but you should be safe enough, and if you do have any you know where to come :)

There are advantages in doing a clean install - i.e. formatting the drive and starting afresh - this option is given on Setup which runs when the CD is inserted.

If you do a clean install which formats the drive all your data and programs will be wiped out. You would need to back up all your data to CD and be prepared to reload all your programs and then set up the PC again.

If you want to read a fully illustrated article go to

    http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

As you are not a 'computer person' your best bet is to install over your existing W2k. Boot up W2k, put the cd in the drive and follow the on screen instructions - should take 40 mins or so.

    installation of xp

    ;) First Thanks, Pete!

I have receive as a gift the Windows XP. I assume, wrong thing to do I know, that this is not the "upgrade" that Pete mentioned.
I don't have a cd burner so clean install is a little out of the question me thinks. It is Windows XP Home edition and installing, I hope, over W2k pro.

    Any more advice?????

    Thanks!

The only difference between the Upgrade and the Full version is the price! But to use an upgrade you need a qualifying OS installed or at least the installation CD's to prove that you qualify for an upgrade.

As I said you should have no problems installing over W2k - just pop the XP Cd into the CD-ROM drive and follow the instructions.
As I recall the default option is to upgrade your installation - regardless of the type of XP CD you have - that's the option to take.

Without A CD-RW your only option is the upgrade over W2k route.

You can't upgrade win2k pro with winxp home, you either neid winxp pro upgrade for win2k, a full winxp pro installation cd, or install winxp home as a dual boot o/s.

    Hi Pete,

"Without A CD-RW your only option is the upgrade over W2k route. "

Not following that. Why the need for a burner as opposed to read-only cd-rom? Is there something about WK2 I don't know about?

    Regards - Charles

EDIT: Never mind, I got it.

    Hello dolphin,

Quite apart from this particular issue, I strongly suggest getting a means of backing up your user data, either a burner or a zip drive.

Sooner or later, you're going to lose some or all of it w/o any means to recoup.

As an interim measure, set up a folder, call it "backups" and periodically copy folders, files that you use to here. This will at least protect you from yourself (inadvertant deletions for example). Or you can use the XP backup utility, by default not installed, must install from XP install disc.

    Regards - Charles
