Installing windows 98se after windows xp installation

    Hello,

    My question is regarding installation of windows 98se after windows xp pro installation. When I first formatted my hard drive (40gb) I choose to partition two sections one with 33gb and the other with ~7gb. I installed windows xp pro on the 33gb portion and did an NTFS format. I thought that I could still go back after xp installation and install 98se on the other partition later. The problem is, it won't let me. I read another forum on the web that said that windows98se won't install if there is an NTFS on drive C. I don't know if that would be the problem, because I formatted the 7gb partition in fat32. How can I bipass this problem and install windows 98se on that 7gb partition? That is, is it still possible to go in and install windows 98se on that second partion?

    be careful!!

    well, i am not the most twchnical of people and despite everyone's warnings i decided to go ahead and install windows 98 after xp....

    it resulted in nothign but trouble and me re installign xp again afterwards. xp just didn't seem to acceot the fact that there was another OS there and refused ot start up.

    i know that's not a solution but i could be something that saves you some time......for nothing

    Dual Boot
    If you want to set up a dual boot with your existing OS, you will need a separate volume (a separate partition on the same physical hard drive), or a separate hard drive.

    The only thing to remember is that the oldest OS should be installed first, but this would usually be the case. When you install Windows XP, it will detect the existing OS, and because in this case you will not select to upgrade your existing OS, Windows XP will make a boot menu, where you will be able to choose which OS you want to boot to.

    Now installing Windows 9x and Me after installing Windows XP should be safe, as long as you install it to a separate volume. Windows 9x / Me do not use the same system files on the boot drive. In fact, you will notice that they will be added automatically to the Windows XP boot menu. I discovered this when I installed Windows 98 in the boot partition of Windows XP. XP itself was installed on drive E, but the boot files were on drive C. The OS you installed last will be the default choice when booting. The easist way to change this is to boot into Windows XP, select System in the Control Panel, select the Advanced tab and press the Settings button under Startup and Recovery. Now you can change the Default operating system.

    I haven't tried, but I would imagine you might have additional problems when you install Windows 2000 or a version of Windows NT after installing XP. This is because these OS'ses use some of the same boot files.

    To be able to use dual boot with Windows 9x and Windows Me, you will need to have your boot volume (usually C:\) file system as FAT or FAT32. So do not convert your boot volume to NTFS during or after the Windows XP install!

    Windows 2000 (and Windows NT 4.0 with service pack 4 or higher) can use NTFS, so it doesn't matter if the boot volume is in NTFS file format or not.

    I guess a better way to clarify my question is, I started from a "zeroed" hard drive. I installed windows xp and chose ntfs for the 32gb partition of my hard drive. On the other 8gb partition I went in and formatted it as fat32. I get an error message when I try and install windows 98se on that 8gb fat32 partition. I'm not sure if it is because I have an ntfs partition on the 30gb hard drive partition or what. I'm not sure what I need to do to install windows 98se, now that I have already put windows xp on the computer. Is it still possible? Will it continue to work/function well after windows 98 installation?
