    Hi all,

I want to play with Win7.

I have an extra HD with WXP installed and I have a couple of blank partitions on the drive.

I know the first step is to download W7 (to the desktop?).

Would you please tell the the steps, 1-2-3, to install it?

    TIA

Burn the ISO download file onto a DVD
Pop in DVD and boot off of it.

To clarify - you do not burn the downloaded ISO file directly to DVD - in your burning software look for 'Burn Image'. In Nero 7 it is under Recorders. This will produce a bootable DVD.

    Hi all,

Thanks for the info. On the link you gave me it said to insert the bootable DVD or CD.

I have Nero Express and one of the options is to burn a bootable data disk (using "El Torito ").

So, CD is my preference; is it necessary to use a DVD? If I've read correctly, the size of W7 is about 300MB compressed.

Also, it says to do a clean install, but it also says, "If you want to replace your computer's existing operating system with the Windows 7 RC, and you don't need to adjust your disk partitions, go to step 2. "

On the HDD I have, I don't care if it overwrites XP or not. In your experience, would it be better to Clean install; overwrite existing XP; or install on a separate partition? I'm kinda leaning towards a separate partition install, but anything will do.

I know this may be 'old hat' to some of you, and I'll probably have a couple more questions before I install, but I'd rather get my dumb questions answered first, instead of writing back and saying, " . . . oops  "

p.s. When I hit "Post..." I got a musical tune that said, "I'm happy in this place ", then quit (the music). ???

Maybe not - disk is ~2.5 Gb
Select DVD > Backup > Burn Image to Disc. The option is also under CD and I assume that the CD's would be spanned, but you would require 3-4.
    Yes

    Hi PeteC,

So I take it that burning a compressed file won't "uncompress" and install? I don't want to span disks.

I'm feeling adventurous so I'll try the "install over" option first, then when that gets munged, I'll do it the correct way :D After all, it's a "break-me" drive.

    Thanks, Pete.

jpChris, CD will be no good you have to use DVD a CD can only hold 700 MB you require 2.5 Gig.
If you do not require that XP that you have on your spare HDD Windows 7 will not overinstall or upgrade from your XP it will create a new install and keep your files and folders for you to use in 7 but you will not be able to use your XP again Windows 7 will sort of put it in a Folder and name it old OS or something like it.
You can use Nero, I think ISO is located in Nero Burning Rom
or you can download IMG Burn from here:

    http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/ImgBurn/1128426215/1

Burn your copy to DVD at a lower speed than Maximum to avoid extra errors.
Set your BIOS to: First boot device CD - DVD
    and follow instructions.
Soon you will be playing in Windows 7
    good luck

To add to the advice already given. If you have burned the DVD correctly, you should have:

    - Root directory folders and files on the 32-bit version DVD are:
5 folders BOOT, EFI, SOURCES, SUPPORT, UPGRADE and 3 files named AUTORUN.INF, BOOTMGR, SETUP.EXE. The Apr 2009 RC version is about 2.37 GB in size.

    - Root directory folders and files on the 64-bit version DVD are:
5 folders BOOT, EFI, SOURCES, SUPPORT, UPGRADE and 4 files named AUTORUN.INF, BOOTMGR, BOOTMGR.EFI, SETUP.EXE. The Apr 2009 RC version is about 3.05 GB in size

    Hi all,

Over 4 hours downloading and I'm at 82%. DSL 1.5\384 -- is this normal?

Also, I have Nero 5.5. On the "burn" list I have 2 choices: Image Recorder (DVD) and Image Recorder (HD Burn). Which should I use?

Also, my DVD\RW is a Pioneer 16x16, what would you suggest the best write\record speed? 4? 6? More? Less?

If the servers are busy - yes. My download from Technet before the public release took 10 - ?? hours on ADSL - I let it run overnight :)
Would suggest 1 notch at least below the quoted DVD disk speed.
You posted earlier that you had Nero Express?? Don't see those options in Nero 7.

May be best to use ImgBurn as suggested above by hawk22.

    Hi Pete,

10 hours??? You said ADSL, but it sounds more like a 56k modem. :p

Anyway, in Nero you click on "more" at the bottom and another toolbar opens. Then click on configure, Expert Features, and tick Clear Archive... and Enable Image Recorder..., and that'll give you the DVD burning feature.

I looked at my blank DVD and it says 8x. So, should I burn at 8x or slower? I've only got 23 of them left so I don't want to burn at 8x and then try slower speeds if 8x is too fast.

Yes - that download was at sub modem speed simply due to the enormous pressere on the server - seemed like everyone and anyone with a MSDN or Technet subscription was after Win 7 at the same time :) Mind you it was only a couple of hours or so since the software had been released.

For a 8x DVD I would burn at 6x or 4x - should be no problem.

    Nuttin' but brain damage

    Hi all,

Well, I spent the better part of the whole day trying to burn Win7, and burning 8 disks in the process — a few might be OK.

NOTE: I used 4x for burning and Memorex DVD's

I tried Nero and although it looked like it was working, there was nothing on the disk and couldn't access it nor burn anything else to it (one down). I tried the Burn Bootable Disk and it kept taking me to insert a disk in "A:\" and the DVD was ditto above (2 down).

So, it was Active ISO Burn's turn: Went OK until the "verify" stage; got to 39% and "failure ". However, when I checked the properties, it was the exact size as it should have been including the files BurrWalnut said (3 down). Second try with ISO Burn went very quickly — about 10 minutes to burn and 2 minutes to verify. Size, folders, etc., was same as first; but I didn't trust it because it went too fast (4 down).

So, I tried again with ISO Burn. This time it took 20 minutes to write and verify, still showing the same size and folders (5 down).

Then I tried IMGBurn. Got nearly done then "Invalid Address For Write" error. However, it was the correct size, but no folders — just the .iso file (6 down).

Since the day was shot to hell already, I decided to use my Pioneer DVD software (ULead DVD Movie Factory 3.5). First use gave me a BSOD (0x00000050). However, it showed the .iso file only and the size was 57,344 bytes bigger (7 down). So, since faint heart ne'er won a snake eating contest, I gave it another go (what the heck, right?). This one took about 15 minutes to burn and no errors. However, it, too was 57,344 bytes bigger and, again, no folders, just the .iso file (8 down).

Out of frustration I clicked on the file and I got the Win7 setup screen! I exited, of course, because this isn't the drive I'm going to use.

Guys, I'm feeling like I'm a couple of cans short of a six-pack, minus that little plastic thingy that holds them together. Could one of you pleasepleaseplease e-mail me a tranquilizer (preferably in dart form) so I can get some sleep? TIA.

Tomorrow: The saga continues as I try all 8 disks!

    Update

    Hi all,

I tried several of the disks (the ones with the files, etc) and the ones with just the .iso extension and all seemed to be OK (reformatting before, of course). I'm not real happy with the layout and trying to find basic stuff and I keep getting "locked out" trying to access stuff.

But, I've started a new thread of "How do I" so this doesn't go off topic.
