Have win 8.1 and windows update keeps prompting me to update to win 10. my concern is that the win 10 download is very large and my internet is DSL 3.0. Seems like it would take a long time to download and long time to install. If my internet connection breaks during the download can I continue the download or will I have to start from the beginning again and will this cause problems? Currently, I am quite happy with win 8.1 as it runs a lot of my old programs that were on Win vista home premium. any suggestions?

Hi Marv6. Do you want to install and upgrade to Windows 10? If so then don't use the Windows Update method. Download and run the Media Creation Tool for Windows 10 and you can upgrade to Windows 10 at your own pace instead of being persuaded through Windows Update.

If you are unsure about upgrading to Windows 10 then you should read through this article first, Windows 10 is Great, Except for the Parts That Are Terrible.

Evan, checked the link you provided and the info scares me. Also, on checking out the media creation tool I am concerned that since my win 8.1 came pre-installed on my HP computer desktop, there seem to be a lot of if, ands, and buts about installing win 10 this way??? I have no clue what my product code is, and it says that installing win 10 will do away with some of my pre-installed drivers and programs provided by HP??? Just might stick with win 8.1 until it is time to get a new computer???

Well the decision is up to you. Of course upgrading to any newer version of Windows without doing a clean install has its risks and you should backup your data first before attempting the upgrade. If you are not having any issues with your system and its running fine then you can stick with Windows 8.1 for the time being.

In my opinion though I would upgrade to Windows 10 as its better than Windows 8.1 and you can expect certain HP programs to no longer work with the newer Operating System but in most cases, most programs that worked on Windows 8.1 should work on Windows 10.

What specific issues regarding Windows 10 are you concerned with?

Evan, not sure yet except for the part about Win 10 not giving one the option to install updates or not, or, did I get that wrong? " Windows 10 forces all home PCs to automatically download and install updates. That’s good in one way, as it keeps home Windows systems secure.

But there’s a big problem with this: It’s not implemented in a respectful way. You can only configure the time Windows reboots — not when it downloads updates." I have always used the let me decide which updates I want.

Hi Marv6, Have a look > Settings > windows Update > Advanced Options > Choose how updates are delivered > Learn more.
    "Windows Update Delivery" http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/windows-update-delivery-optimization-faq
All the answers are provided. Neil.

P.S. I Upgraded my HP 1000 Notebook installed with W8 initially. I did the Update to W8.1 and had it set to Auto Updates (my choice) and then made the Upgrade to W10 without any hitches - all HP is up to date and working as smooth as.
I'm beginning to wonder whether the major problems users are encountering with the W10 Upgrade is because they have been selective with their choice of MS updates.
I have allowed MS to update my comps (by reason MS should know what I need to secure my comp) and All of my Upgrades from W7 Pro and W8.1 Pro and Home have been flawless.

You can hide and configure certain Windows Updates that you may not want by following the instructions in this link, How to Prevent Windows 10 From Automatically Downloading Updates.

Thank you Evan and retired learner for your input. Glad you had no problems in going to win 10. I did not install some of the optional updates to win 8.1. Will think about it some more and unless Microsoft changes its mind about the free upgrade I still have some time to decide.
