Hi. I have seen in older posts that I may have trouble with my modem if I install W98 over W95 because I have an internal modem. Can I unplug it or something while I load W98. I don't want to have to take it to the shop ( a non package retiree ) if it is something a nut & bolt man can handle?. Does anyone know what it will actually do if it does cause trouble . I have loaded W98 over w95 on my sisters PC ( with external modem ) & had no problems with it. Also I have replaced the battery in the PC & the clock only kept time for a couple of days & the went again. It has been playing up for 12mths, also there is no battery meter that I can find ( the battery is making contact etc. Any ideas? Thanks "D "

    demon,

Just a couple thoughts. First of all, a clean install of Win98 would be much better. Unless you don't want to reload all your programs. If you are worried about the modem, I would uninstall it and the drivers first. Once you have 98 loaded, install the modem again. As far as the battery, I can't offer any suggestions there.

    demon,

The drivers are the software that runs the modem itself. Since you don't have the modem disk, you could try going to the manufacturer's web site for the drivers and any software that you may want. Try to download to a floppy disk. Then you'll at least have the modem taken care of. Of course, if they don't offer the drivers or you can't get them to load onto the floppy, the clean install may not be an option.

Yes, I would physically remove the modem card also. Otherwise, 98 will see it and try to install drivers for it. This is another option for you. Sometimes 98 will install basic drivers for hardware when it detects it. They won't be as good as the manufacturer's drivers, but they may work good enough. If you want to try that, just leave the card in during your upgrade.

Problems with the modem are not restricted to just 98 over 95.

And internal Modem can cause problems when upgrading any OS.

As was suggested, the better idea is to remove the modem first.

I dont have any disc's for the modem only the book , I bought the set up Second hand. "

I would do all I could to find the 98 drivers for the modem BEFORE doing anything.

But just so that you don't get a big surprise. There are some Internal Modems that absolutely refuse to go from one OS to the other and work. Especially the El Cheapo Internal PCI WinModems.

The BEST cure for modem problems is to go for an External. They will ( 98% of the time ) work with any OS. They are more reliable and they relieves some of the pressure of operation off of the CPU. They are a FULL Modem and not a half of one like an Internal.

Oh BTW. I agree. A clean install of 98 is much better.

Problems with the modem are NOT restricted to just 98 over 95.

Please note the change that I have made to the above line of my previous reply.

Hi M.M. & Billy Bob. Thanks for answering my post. Looks like I may have to get a clean install, but if I try your instructions first & it runs amock I can get it installed then anyway. It will be worth a try just to learn more about it's insides. Thanks again for your time . Regards Des F.:)

Impossible for us to answer. IF we say no it will. If we say yes it won't

Internal Modems can be tough to deal with after they have once been setup and then OS changes are made. And it is the MODEM not the OS thatis the cause.

That is why I gave up on them years ago. The last External I just gave away had been on anything from DOS to Windows ME and NEVER a problem.

But if you leave the Modem out ( physicaly ) when installing the OS I believe it has a better chance of working.

Also I would not attempt to install the modem until windows as been restarted several times and at least one of them a power off re-boot. Windows may not do everything right the first time through.

But overall I think you would be doing yourself a BIG favor by going to and External Serial Prot Modem. I have not seen ( or herad of ) and OS that they would not work with yet.

    demon,

Sounds like the way to go. Just make sure that you copy all your important info over to floppies and have all your drivers ready to go. A quick double check to make sure you have everything will help to eliminate any future headaches! Do remove the modem before the upgrade. Best of luck and let us know how you come out!
