    Hi all,

I have the Vista RC1 and am currently clearing out space for its installation. I want to partition my HD, so that it will have its own partition, so that it will not interfere with my very stable Windows XP installation. I installed Beta 1 on the same partition once before and it was a total disaster. Good timing, though, as I needed to re-image my HD at the time anyway.

So my question is, what's the best way to do this? I thought I'd create a partition with 20GB and install it on there. Last time, however, I also tried installing it on a partition I had created, but installing it on anything other than the C: drive was not an option.

    Thanks for your help! :)

You can install it on any partition you want... I just started a clean install from within my current WinXP installation (because Vista upgrade doesn't give me a working system), and I choose to install it on drive G.

That's exactly what I'd like to do. Fresh install on a SEPARATE partition. For some reason, if my memory serves me correctly, the horrendously buggy Beta 1 didn't give me that option. Hopefully, RC1 will. Does it ask you for where you want to install it?

Also, assuming you have RC1, how stable is it? Beta 1 was just one blue screen after another. So having RC1, how many Beta's did I skip? I know there was a Beta 2. Was there a Beta 3 as well?

Thanks for your very prompt response. :)

Yes, you will be given a choice.

    I don't have RC1 (well, I did) I got RC2 now.

After Beta 2 there was only RC1 & RC2 that have been made publicly available. I didn't keep track of all the builds that we beta testers got, but there were quite a few

The RC's seem quite stable as long as you do a clean install.

    YMMV

I had trouble with RC1 changing the system volume information details when I dual booted with XP Pro.
It was fine for 2 weeks, but when I tried to view the contents of the drive containing XP from within Vista's explorer all hell broke loose.

Does anyone know if this issue has been addressed in RC2?
    If not - be carefull.

    Spotta.

    "CrunchDude ",
I guess you've installed Vista by now. Sorry I rarely visit the good ship WindowsBBS any more.
Anyway, probably the best way to install Vista is by booting from the ISO DVD. Why? Because by booting from the DVD your vista install will appear to be on the same drive as XP. I.E. C drive. When you boot into XP that will be on C drive as well. It just makes it simpler when installing programmes rather than having to check that the Vista programme is installing on the D drive, if you install Vista from with in XP. That's the only difference. When I installed Beta 2 I installed from within XP to the D partition. RC2 was much nicer installing to the C Drive, even though in reality it is still the D partition.
