I have a laptop that shipped with Windows XP home in a hidden partition for recovery use. How do I upgrade to Vista if I want a clean installation without having to purchase the non-upgrade product? I've read one message saying it can be done with the original installation cd of WinXP.

You can do a full install with an upgrade dvd. BUT, during the process you are required to put the XP cd in the drive..Since you don't have one you won't be able to pop it in...You'll either have to do an actual upgrade or purchase a full install..

You might be able to conatact the pc maker for an XP cd. Dell fro example sells em for ten dollars.

I don't think that article from MS is correct Steve. Well, it may be correct but I'm guessing it applies to doing an Anytime Upgrade, not an install using a purchased DVD. I could be wrong but that's what I'm betting on. See my post there for my explanation as to why I think this. Arie posted to that thread again and is looking into it and is going to let us know what he finds out.

Yeah Tony, I saw that. So now they have effectively made it so you don't need any previous OS at all in order to use an upgrade disk? One can't help but snicker just a little bit. :D

Having said that, I don't see a lot of difference between doing that or installing XP first. If I'm understanding correctly, if you have XP on the hard drive you can install Vista to a different folder and get a clean install that way. Then just delete the XP Windows folder, clean up the boot menu if there's anything to clean up and you're off and running. So, format, install XP, reboot and install Vista. Then delete the XP folder. As I said, I don't see much difference. Either way you have to go through two OS installs to get it done.

Better and faster to install vista twice because:
    1. vista installs a lot faster than xp
    2. no xp stuff left on the drive

On the second run of the vista installer you can choose "custom" and do a clean install. You should also be able to do "custom" if xp is on the drive.

I truly don't believe MS overlooked this option of installing clean w/ an upgrade dvd. The amount of buzz and user talk generated by this subject on the www is better promo than MS could buy anywhere!
