I have a USB Card Reader which worked fine until 2 days ago. All of a sudden Win 98 decided to abandon this device and I can no longer read my Camera's Compact Flash Card.
When I try to re-install the USB Reader (SC3SE) Device Driver Win 98 reports a successful install. However, there is no drive installed and the USB Hub light is not blinking. The Divice Manager in System Properties shows a fault. Under "Device Status" it says:
"The NTKERN.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver. (code 2.)
To fix this, click Update Driver to update the device driver. "
When I do that, Windows tells me it cannot find a driver even though I pointed to the CD Rom drive, which has the CD that came with the Card Reader.
Can anyone offer some help please?

Have you tried removing the device in device manager, also remove any unknown devices or USB devices you know you do not have.
THen install the software and drivers, before you connect the reader.

Yes Pete I have tried all of that. There was no unknown device in Device Manager. The manual of the Card Reader explicitly mentions to install the software first, then reboot, then connect the reader. When I plug the reader into the USB hub Windows churns for a second or two and then tells me the device has been installed. At the same time the flashing light on the USB hub stops blinking and leaves the connection for dead.

    More Information ----
the NTKERN.VXD device loader file resides inside the VMM32.VXD which is a monolithic file that contains many different virtual divice drivers, specific to each individual computer. When installing new hardware Windows writes the driver into vmm32.vxd. The device driver in question for my particular card reader is called sescusb.sys which ntkern.vxd claims it cannot load.
Here ends my wisdom about this subject.

If your backups are current, suggest a clean re-installation of win98, wiping everything including the partitions first. then reinstall and it should work.

Thanks...... but no. I don't want to go down that path. Too much at stake.

Remove the USB Controllers in Device Manager and reboot (no devices connected). Check for updated drivers for the USB Controllers.

Look through the driver files on the CD. For the .inf file relating to your reader, right-click on the file and select Install. If Windows does not identify it when you connect it, run the Add Hardware wizard and see if you can find it in the "list ".

Hope you have a good backup system, your harddrive could fail tomorrow. Are you prepared?

Windows will eventually get too overburdened with junk and start to "play up ". It has to be refreshed sometimes. It is good to know ways of reinstalling a fresh copy of Windows, the drivers, the applications and the data without losing a lot (and get rid of stuff that is no longer needed). It may not be this time, but it will eventually happen.

Having different drive partitions is one way to be able to reinstall with a minimum of drama.

Thanks Mattman, for your advice. I am afraid you are right.
Eventually I have to face the music. I better start to be prepared as best as is possible by gohsting, copying and backing up everything I have grown fond to.
Thanks again and keep your fingers crossed for me!
    Cheers Axel
