    Hi,

New poster here and not sure if this goes in "networking" or "windows 7 ". I chose here because this is about getting the hardware working and not actually a networking questions. If I chose wrong, I apologize.

    Here is the background:

I have an older (~5 years) laptop (HP nc8230). It came with XP Pro but I have installed Win7 Pro some time ago ~ 9 months. Works fine even though I have a relatively low score on the Windows 7 index. I don't do gaming or very strenuous computing with this.

I have built in wifi (802.11g) but I have a 802.11n router. I have a TrendNet TEW-621PC pcmcia wireless adapter. It is compatible with Win7 - it works fine on my Dell Laptop so I know the card it OK (reported speeds of ~275Mbps).

My trouble is getting this to work on my HP. I installed the latest driver from the trendnet site. When I insert the card in the pcmcia slot I get the popup from windows saying installing new hardware. It starts to install the drivers then I get a BSOD.

I am no expert but reading through the different dump files, the gtipci21 keeps showing up. This is the texas instrument driver for my pcmcia bus, if I understand properly. I have several minidump files and this is referenced in all of them. I am not completely convinced that I have the correct driver for my bus, but I don't know.

I have run the minidump through debugwiz and this is the debuglog for one of the minidumps. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. It may be that I am really trying to flog a dead horse and this just won't work, but I would like to know that too.

Thank you in advance for the help.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

Your analysis of the dump would appear to be correct and gtpci21.sys would appear to be the culprit. That said ....
The driver would appear to be outdated and unlikely to be compatible with Window 7.

I am curious to know where you found the Windows 7 drivers for the laptop as HP do not list any Windows 7 drivers for the nc8230 .

I have been using the Vista drivers. In most cases these seem to work just as well. Other than the gtipci21, I have not experienced any problems.

I also have a pcmcia harddrive that I used for backups. That drive still works, only the network card gives me problems.

I have not been able to find any way to update the gtipci file. If I try to update driver automatically through the device manager, windows tells me that my driver is the most up to date. So I am not sure that I can even get a more current driver.

Which version of the TrendNet TEW-621PC pcmcia wireless adapter do you have?

Version 1.0R is only supported on XP

Version 2.0R is supported on Vista and 7

I have the version 2.0R. I should have mentioned that previously.

Would you check the date of gtipci21.sys on the Dell - I would imagine that they are the same, but worth a check anyway.

I really have no idea why the card will not function on the HP, unless it has a different version of the Texas chip onboard, which would seem to be possible given the age of the laptop.

On my Dell laptop (Precision M65), it is an 02Micro PCMCIA bus. The date on that driver is 2009.

Given that the same card works on the Dell with a different bus it would seem that it is not compatible with the HP. Windows 7 compatibility is not an issue here I think.

Apparently your card uses a Ralink 2860 chipset

So I’d give the driver located here a try

Scroll down to the bottom of the page to select the link for the Win7 driver.
Second page lists your card by PCI\VEN _________

    I got it working.

I downloaded driver max (www.drivermax.com) to check the drivers on my computer. I updated several - I am using the free version so only able to download two drivers a day. I think what finally did it was when I updated the carbus driver and then re-installed the Win7 driver set from TRENDnet.

I inserted my card and no blue screen. But the TRENDnet wireless client did not see the card. I checked the device manager and it said there was an error (Code 39) installing the driver.

So I did an "update driver" from the device manager. I selected an older TRENDnet driver for the card. Device manager reported that it installed correctly. The wireless client still did not see the card though.

I did another "update driver" from device manager and this time chose the newer driver (that failed installing with a Code 39 previously). This time it installed fine. The wireless client detected the card.

I added the security information for my wireless network and I was off an running. I am using the PCMCIA card to connect as I write this.

    Thanks for the help everyone.
