Yes - I'm an old fogie - just working with what I've got. I found directions posted in 2004 on a Dell forum with instructions on how to install a PCI graphics card. I understand everything except

" 1. Connect the monitor to the added PCI card

    2. Open the case cover and add the PCI video card "

    1. Does this mean to connect the monitor cable that is now plugged into the back of the server? or is there an monitor connection inside the case that connects to the PCI video card?

    2. Assuming monitor is connected to video card and I get the card installed in the PCI slot, do I then put the case cover back on before powering on the computer?

The post I found was several years old and I prefer working with you folks as you've been very helpful in the past.

I think I have seen those instructions :) I think they should be the reverse, but you could do it that way Edit: NO, you can't. You cannot connect the monitor to the card before you put the the card in the slot.

    So,
    1. Open the case cover and add the PCI video card

    2. Connect the monitor to the added PCI card

It talks about a PCI card, there are other types of cards now...PCI, AGP and PCI-E (X16). AGP may also be broken up into AGP 1-2X and AGP 4X-8X, because one type might not run on the other type (different voltages), but some cards can run 1X - 8X.

If you know your system specifications, it will tell you what sort of graphics adapter can be added.

Your Dell Dimension 2400 has an integrated graphics 'card' in the form of a chip on the motherboard.

A PCI graphics card fits into one of the white slots shown in the first image here - you will need to remove the appropriate blanking plate at the rear of the computer case to fit the PCI card.

The monitor cable which is currently plugged into the graphics socket on the rear of the computer should be unplugged and plugged into the socket on the rear of the PCI graphics card.

There is no need to replace the case cover before powering up the computer and installing the graphics card drivers which should be supplied on a CD with the card. When you have the new card up and running, shut off the computer and replace the cover. This will save the hassle of having to remove the case cover again in the event of a problem on installation. Just keep your fingers out of the case while it is powered up :)

Thanks to you all for great, prompt responses. That's why I use this site!!! I did check multiple sites for PCI cards compatible with dim2400 and bought one recommended by other users. I plan to install memory, a DVD drive and the video card this weekend. Let's not mark this thread closed until I know for sure that I don't have any problems!

    Problem solved

You all can close this thread now. After reading directions, I chickened out installing DVD and graphics card myself & took it to local computer store for installation. All is well in my world, hope the same for yours.

Wise move if you did not have the confidence to do so yourself :) Glad to hear the job was completed satisfactorily.
