My June 1999-built computer came with an internal, 56K, LT WinModem. I plan to take it out and replace it with an internal, 56K, US Robotics true-hardware-type modem. Before I take out the old one, should I jot down all the settings for my current modem, and for the dial-up entries that modem uses? [I thought these might all be lost if I take out the old LT WinModem.]

And once I plug in the new USR internal modem, what do I do to get everything going again? With the new modem installed, what do I have to set-up or change with my Win98 system? Is this simply "plug-and-play" or do I have to configure some software?

    My OS: Win98 1st Edition.

    Thanks,

    Stan

    Stan,

    1. Go to Device Mangler (Manager - Right click My Computer, select Prpoerties, then click on the DM tab). Go to the modem and delete it. Do not tell the PC to look for any hardware. Shut the PC down.

    2. Install the new modem (After reading the instructions for the modem since SOME modems like USR can be finicky). Turn on the PC and follow the instructions that the modem says (sometimes they give you different instructions based on the modem so it is important to read the instructions on the new modem before you install it).

Windoze will see the new modem and pick up the dialup # but to be safe, copy the phone # down. There are NO modem settings you need for the old modem other than the phone #, your user ID and your password. I hope you know all them.
