I have a second computer which needs a Hard Drive. I'm considering getting a Western Digital 40GB HD. Can I install the new HD without installing the "Data LifeGuard" software? Can I simply install the HD, partition and format it then install an OS?

Yes, but partition it first and format it secondly (wise crack) - you'll find it works better that way. I try to avoid those 3rd party HDD programs like the plague, while others swear by them.

I got a 60 Gig Western Digital HD in my spare PC. It's cut into 4 main partitions fat32, ext3, ext3,linux swap I used fdisk to set the main partitions then formatted them with the OS install. As for the Data Lifegaurd Tools I believe I used mine for a coaster. Now there maybe a small chance that your Bios doesn't support 40 Gig (or larger) Hard drives (mine worked fine) then you may have to use this part of the software but as for the error checking, formatting parts of it I didn't use.
