    Hi,
I am trying to replace my CD-ROM drive. I have a Dell Dimension XSP T500 and am running Win98. The old (original) drive used to work OK, except after it was mechanically smashed.
So I bought a new MicroStar ( MSI) MS8152 CD-ROM drive to replace the
old one. I installed it and ran the CDROM detect in "Add New Hardware" in
the control panel. It says it cannot find the drive, and the drive does not
operate. ( It does light up and move when you push the button. ) I tried
    re-connecting, etc.
I found the MSI website, but it is a little nebulous with instructions. I
also have a copy of the Oak Technology Universal CD-ROM driver, if it helps.
Can you give me a step by step way to proceed?
    Thanks!!!

Closed the tray while your beer mug was still in it? :D

It should not need drivers. Optical drives use the Windows native drivers.

What you will need to do is set the jumper pins correctly. If it is the only drive on the data (ribbon) cable, set it to Master. If there are two drives on the cable, one should be set as Master, the other as Slave. (If you still have the old drive set the jumpers to the same as that).

    Here is the manual:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/manual/mnu/spt_mnu_list.php?kind=5&CHIP=CD-ROM&ID=2

    Post back with any ?'s

    CD ROM Install

    Matt,
I think you might have the answer. I did not reconfigure the unit
to master! ( You mean it has to be wired right to work? )
I will take it apart and try out the fix.
    Thanks!!!

    Hi Mechanic,

At the back of the drive you will find a series of small gold coloured pins. The jumper is a small plastic cover/connector that shorts two of those pins. On the panel of the drive it will tell you which two pins need to be connected so that it will run as either Master or Slave. Set it the same as the old CDrom if you still have it. OR.... If it is connected to the same data (ribbon/IDE) cable as your harddrive, set it as Slave. If it is on a cable by itself, set it as Master.

    Matt,
The drive is up and running. Just changed to "master" and it
detected. Sometimes it is the simple things which you just overlook!
    I appreciate your help.
    Thanks!!!

Well done Hank. I had a look at that "manual "...one page of not very helpful information (not even a diagram). Glad you got it sorted out.

    Matt
PS "Master of the Bitstream "...I'll work on that!
