I searched previous threads on this MSWorks issue, but they don't seem to end with definitive answers...

I previously backed up all my files and folders before I had to reinstall Vista (BOOTMGR problem). Now that I've restored those files and folders from backup, i see the MSWorks (and MSOffice) folder in Program Files.

But when I click on the MSWorks exe in the MSWorks folder, i get:
"Microsoft Works cannot access 1 or more files it needs to run. The files may have been renamed, deleted or moved. Try reinstalling Microsoft Works and then restarting again. "

The problem is my computer did not come with a separate CD containing the MS programs that were installed. Is there another exe file in the MSWorks folder i should be clicking on to get the program to work? Or is there a dll file that needs to be moved somewhere? I don't have the slightest idea on how to get these MS programs, in general, to work on my computer again.

    Any help would be appreciated...

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

If I read your post correctly you backed up your files and folders -including Program Files and then reinstalled Vista - with format?

You cannot simply backup the Program Files folder and restore it to another installation and expect it to work. When a program is installed many files are installed within Windows itself in addition to those files installed in Program Files together with a host of Registry entries. You are missing those files installed within Windows and the Registry entries.

Regrettably there is no way of inducing MSWorks or Office to run without reinstalling the programs.

My apologies for replying so late. I'm still having all kinds of problems with my PC...

I was searching through this forum when i first signed on, and i remember randomly coming across a thread concerning replacement CDs for originally-installed Vista programs; but i can't seem to find that thread anymore. Is there indeed a number to call or an e-mail to write to get such a CD(s) for free?

You'd have to call your OEM (the company that build your computer).
