    Hey Everyone,

I'm new here and have a question. I recently installed Windows 2000 over my old Windows 1998. Everything worked out OK, but now my sound is not working. Going to my control panel and Add/Remove Hardware I discovered that some of the hardware listed there has a yellow exclaimation mark next to it, including the "Multimedia Audio Controller ". I tried Add/Troubleshoot and double clicked it. It searched my hard drive but couldn't find a driver. I even had it search the Windows 2000 CD. Lastly, I tried uninstalling the controller and then reinstall without luck. My sound system is a ALTEC Lansing.

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Jim

Sounds like you need to find win2k drivers for your sound card.

The ACS54 are your speakers but do you know what sound card you have? Is it listed in device manager? May be provide more details about your machine, model, etc.

I think that is your speaker system not your sound card.
Anyway first you'll have to find the make of your sound card. You should have documentation to tell you this. Then go to the website and see what they have for drivers.

I would also suggest maybe trying to install generic or legacy drivers for it. Win2k should have them. If anyone else is reading correct me if I'm wrong;), but unless the sound card is a very expensive one those should work just fine.

To find out what sound card you have go to Belarc.com and download and install the advisor. I printed it out for use later. It will tell you all you need to know about your computer.

    Thanks for the replies!

My machine is a HP Pavillion 8560C.

When I used Belarc (btw very cool program) there was nothing detected under "Multimedia" and I couldn't find any other place where a soundcard might be listed.

In my device manager (I am actually very inexperienced in this area of the computer) I found under "Sound, video and game controllers" a bunch of Legacy stuff, including audio drivers (all with the little megaphone icons next to them). There were no exclaimation points next to them. However, under "Other Devices" I found Multimedia Audio Controller. This had a question mark icon and has an exclaimation point next to it. Is this the problem area?

Whenever I disinstall it, it detects it again and attempts to reinstall. It asks to search for the driver and asks to search my floppies, hard drive a specific location and "Windows Update ". I chose all but the specific location (with my Win 2000 CD in one of the searched floppies), but in the end it is unable to find the driver.

    Thanks!

If you go to the HP support site and follow the links for your computer (8560c) to the driver page, there should be a link for Win2000 drivers. There you should find drivers for your hardware (probably Riptide) Download and follow the instructions.
