    Hi

I downloaded Firefox 3.5 from within Firefox browser and saved to a folder.
Does this have to be installed as a clean install after removing 3.0.11? Or, can I just install the new version over the older one?

    Your help will be appreciated.

PS Any known issues with this new version?

It can be installed right over the older one, actually it gave me the option to install it automatically with the download, so that shows you that you don't have to uninstall the older version. There are a few addons and themes that will not work, but they have not hindered it yet, may be integrated into the newer version, not sure.

    Ann,

Just a personal preference here, but I always uninstall the old version and then install the new. I just like to have a clean install every time. The whole process doesn't take long and I've never had any problems with Firefox. Like I said, just a personal choice.

As far as issues, the only thing that I came across was that my RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin would not work. An easy fix though. After installing FF, uninstall RealPlayer and then reinstall. For me, that took care of the problem.

For me, upgrading from 3.0.11 to 3.5 went seamlessly.

I know of one individual who had problems, as reported at an another newsgroup.
It is hard to tell what he did, because he did not answer to a number of questions.
To the best of my understanding, he used the incremental update. He reported problems that he did not have with 3.0.11, such as the disappearance of his saved passwords.
3.5 seems to have gone completely to the .sqlite format, and he did not have the signons.sqlite file. My 3.0.11 has both .txt and .sqlite formats, so I don't know what could have happened. I decided to have both 3.0.11 and 3.5 installed, in different folders, and used with different profiles. I did run into one perplexing problem, when my shortcut for 3.0.11 was taken over by 3.5, but was able to correct the problem by editing the Properties info.

Thanks to all of you for the input. I will probably do a clean install and hope for the best.

I have yet to have any problems, and I let the update of FF install it for me, which was over the older version.

Thanks to all. I decided to take the easy way out and D/L again and let FF upgrade itself.

I just did it so I haven't tested it, but it is working. Don't you love it when something works. One thing I notice is the tab with the plus sign(+). It might drive me crazy or I might get to love it. LOL. :)

Like you I've only just upgraded but the + isn't an issue with me (I like it), it's the tearaway tabs that I'm still getting used to. I reckon I'll be happy once I'm used to them but right now it's a little annoying seeing several browsers hidden behind other windows because you inadvertantly tore a tab.

FF3.5 does appear to render a lot quicker that ie & FF 3.0.x though :)

Generally first impressions are good :D

I haven't noticed any tearaway tabs yet. Doesn't sound too good. How can I seewhat you are referring to?

    Ann,

It's good but it takes a little getting used to.

Have two (or more) tabs open then right click and drag on the tab you want to tear away. You'll now see FF with only that tab but a second instance of FF is still running with any other opened pages.

wildfire, I don't think I want to try that. I am not that adventurous. Sound as if this is something you have, if you want it. It is not something you are forced to use. Correct?

    Correct(ish) ;)

If you don't drag (tear) a tab away then you won't even notice it :)

However, it does come in handy at times. Sometimes during browsing I have to follow several links before I find the information I'm after. Once I'm happy I can tear that tab away and close all the referring pages in the other browser.

Perhaps no good for you Ann but others may find this usefull.

FF 3.5 is certainly faster than 3.0.x though ;)

I wish I knew what you are talking about. I may be missing something useful, but this tearing/dragging talk makes me say: duh?
Which goes to show you, whatever is a source of concern for one person, may be a non-issue for others.

    Hi Westside,

It's probably only an issue for me at the moment because I currently have a slight injury to my right hand which is causing loss of feeling in my index finger. The first couple of times I tore a tab accidentally (using a lappy touchpad) I thought it was a bug with 3.5 not realising that I'd inadvertently opened a second instance of FF and the other tabs were still there in the previous instance. :D

It is not good to have such injury. I am a lefty, and have a serious injury in my index finger, which will require surgery. But, my right hand is fine.
I had no idea what tearing a tab was, until this thread came up. So, no issue, today, for me, but who knows what the future has to bring to me.
