    Hi all,

Just a quick question, please. My Dad's just bought an optical mouse & has asked me to install it. I'm generally OK with this sort of stuff, but just want to check before I do it when I next go round there.

At the moment he's using a 'normal' mouse, connected to a dedicated mouse port. The new cordless mouse, which will replace it, uses a base unit which connects to a USB port. Should I get rid of the current mouse first, using 'remove hardware', unplug it, connect the new cordless one to the USB port & let the OS (Win98) find it? Presumably doing it the other way round (i.e. installing the new mouse first) would cause a conflict. Am I correct in thinking that this is the way to go?

There are no installation instructions with the new mouse, but it looks straightforward & Dad still has the original Win98 installation CD-ROM if that's needed.

Sorry to trouble you all with something so elementary, but your confirmation (or otherwise) of my plan would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

I just did the task on a friend’s computer, but in his case both where of the PS/2 variety.

I installed the software for the new mouse, then unplugged the old, and plugged in the new.

The reason it didn't seem to work (and the reason he asked me) was that you had to press a pin on the mouse, so it would "synch" with the base station (wireless, RF not IR).

Sometimes it helps to RTFM! :D

Hey Martinberry: Just thought I'd add a note here fyi. You can connect a ps2 mouse and a usb mouse at the same time.

You could have gone ahead and installed the software for the new mouse and plugged it in, use either mouse.

Some people have found two mice (mouses?) convienient for playing two party games. Just use one at a time. Both can't be moving the cursor at the same time I've been told.

One thing about the wireless mouse, I have one, and in some instances, it won't work when you are doing some repairs or reinstalls, when the software for the wireless mouse has not yet been re-loaded by Windows. I keep the old ball-in-the-bottom mouse plugged into the PS2 port, just put it off to the side, it will always work.

If you decide to use the ps2 mouse, do not plug it in when the machine is running, shut down first.

Got to agree with Arie, RTFM, although I seldom do myself.:)

Thanks, both of you, for your advice. I'll be visiting Dad early next week & will try it out then. When I've finished I'll post back to let you know how it went.

    Cheers.
