    HELP!!

How do i get my COM4 port to work? I install it and it says i dont have enough resources to work it. Keeps telling me COM1 is using the resources. I have no idea whats going on as im used to Win98 (which the COM works perfectly in).

Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thx all

You may want to check the IRQ settings for you COM Port. COM 2 / 4 share and IRQ. COM 1 / 3 also share an IRQ.

You can only use COM 1 or 3 at the same time, but not both, since they are ISA devices and don't share well.

Got a question to ask about this COM4. Is this a physical serial port mounted on the back of your computer where something plugs into it? Or is it a port that your internal modem connects to?

Is it a 16 bit hard drive controller card with com ports? You might want to check the jumpers on it and be sure that the controller is disabled, may be set that way at time of manufacture. Your com port IRQ's and Addresses are set by using jumpers on that card. You will need the documentation that came with that card to see what jumpers need to be changed or left alone. Set them to something other than what your original ports are set to.
You can share an IRQ, but the address must be different.
Go into Device Manager, double click Computer at the top and you can see what IRQ's are free and how many are shared. Then click the Input Output (I/O), and you can see what addresses are in use by your current ports. Not sure on this, but has been a while, but don't try to go to IRQ's 2 and 8. You will see that these are not shared.

Take a look at Q252420. It has a lot of information on IRQ sharing and spells out several areas where Win98 will allow a thing and W2K will not - with reasons and work-arounds.
