   When I want to use certain programs, the program tells me to insert the cd. Can I just download the cd into my harddrive so the program uses it from there?

   Yes, you should be able to do that - I have done it.
   
   Copy the entire CD to a folder on your HD and run the setup program from there - this is important as the program needs to know where the source files are - in this case where the files are located on your HD.
