installing 98 on a pc that has Xp

ok i have been searching and searching, but i havn't found a working way to install 98 se on my pc that already has xp pro. if anyone has any ideas please let me know........i have a second drive so i dont' have to put it on c, really that is my problem..............i don't get a choise on which disk to install it on.

I had 9x on my C drive to start with. I have read about situations such as yours, the suggested solution was to physically switch drives. In my mind, perhaps the better solution would be to uninstall XP and then install the 9x first on the C drive, then XP on the D drive.

1. Disconnect the drive with XP on it.
2. Install the spare drive you have as Primary Master.
3. Install Win 9x on it and shut down computer when done.
4. Connect the drive with XP as Primary Slave and start computer.
5. Computer boots to 9x. Delete "boot.ini" .on the XP drive.
6. Insert XP CD in the drive. Proceed to repair the XP OS on D:
7. This should generate the dual boot menu on re-booting.

NOTE:
Just in case ALWAYS backup your valuable data files

 

Mahmud603's suggestion should work but if you are using NTFS with XP, the 98 install won't be able to see any of the XP drive and so you won't be able to delete boot.ini.

I never did find out how physically switching drives worked for the person that had the same situation I read about, so I hope if SITH uses this method, he posts back.

If I had to do this, I still woud reformat the C drive and just do the OS installs in the order that MS demands: 9X 1st, NT OSes second. It also resolves the NTFS issue. I may be mistaken, but I think NTFS can't be switched to FAT32, only FAT32 to NTFS.

no newt is right........i found out when i installed xp home for the first time, i had 2000 on the slave drive, and it was useing fat32, i couldn't move files from the xp drive to the W2k drive........but i could move files from W2k to xp...............now that being said............i do have 98 installed on another drive that im not currently useing.........and i have found a source that will correct the boot problem (supposed to anyhow......lol)

the drive that has 98 on it already was a primary master when i installed 98, im wondering if i install the drive as a primary slave, fix the boot and boot into 98, will norton utillities fix my short cut problem?...........this being a former "c" drive.

 

the problem that im having is when i try to install 98, it wants to default to c drive and i have xp pro there.........and that drive is ntfs. i don't get a choise on which volume to install it on......i have 8 differant volumes, but it wants to use c.

 

To cover the Win XP (NTFS) scenario, I would boot to XP to start off with, delete the hidden file "boot.ini ", shut down the computer and then follow my earlier suggestion but obviously omitting item 5.

Installing Win 98 on your other drive with the XP and any other drives drives disconnected will automatically default to C:.

The default OS will be the last one installed (XP) but that can be changed from XP.

There are other ways of installing 98 AFTER XP using Boot Managers but I would not wish t go that root.

Finally, if you have XP why bother with 98 unless you have a pressing need for it such as gaming ?.

 

I have installed ME on a seperate HD just for gaming cuz XP is not as game friendly.

 

well i HAD a need for it............lol, but i discovered today that it isn't gonna help my problem. oh well i guess i will just install 2000 pro on that other drive.

 

What about NT, & Win2k?

I know XP has it's own set of "problems ", as far as backward compatibility. So, I wanted to use Win2k, and NT. I have an app that has to have either W98, or NT. It will install on Win2k, and run the 1st time, but won't boot a 2nd time unless you re-install it.

I had been using Partition Magic 7, with BMagic7, but when PM7 told me that my entire 40Gig WD drive was bad, and I could still use it fine with all the other partitions on it; and I hadn't even done anything to it. Plus, I've gotten so frustrated with their whole Tech Support attitude that I've just said "***** YOU!" They're the only s'ware co. I know of that will ONLY support the current version of any of their products. How stupid is that, after you've already spent the $$$ for training, and R&D, just to **** off your loyal customers.
