    Hi,

I have recently reinstalled a laptop machine from a norton ghost image taken some time ago (image size about 2.1GB). I then set about removing unwanted applications and applying updates to others. I must have removed over 700MB of applications but was surprised to see that the total size of the C: drive was still in excess of 2.8GB. All thats installed now is Windows Office XP Pro and a couple of other small applications in addition to a standard installation of Windows XP Pro.

Can anyone suggest why the amount of space used is so large? Can it be reduced?

Perhaps its just me thinking it should be small and there really is nothing wrong with the size at all!

    Regards FarmerJo

    Hibernation
    System Restore
    Pagefile
    Service Pack(s) (uninstall)
    Hot Fixes (uninstall)
    Stuff

For what it's worth, I just loaded XP-pro as a new, clean install to a 15Gb partition. Hibernation & System Restore are off but I do have GoBack with 4Gb of space. I'll reduce that to around 2Gb when I finish playing around but since I'm messing with the new release canidate (read Beta) of SP2 I wanted to be able to undo lots of changes.

The only app of any size is MS Office 2003.

I am using nearly 8Gb for the system and apps and this load is less than a week old with more stuff I want to add.

I think the answer to your question is that Ghost compresses the image when it stores it and expands it when you restore.

I took notes when installing XP and other applications on my desktop. The sizes are reduced by the size of the pagefile (0.75 GB) which is excluded from the Image. System Restore and Hibernation are disabled. I checked the size prior to creating each Image:

I forgot to mention that today it is at ~3.2 GB - 0.75 GB = 2.45 GB
(As You can see in my quote, in sweden we use a decimal comma not a decimal point.)

    Hi,

Can you take an image an not include the page file? Or is there a way to clear this file to a size of zero at shutdown?

    Farmer JoJo,
If you set the pagefile to clear at shutdown, it delays shutdown, with no appreciable performance effects, so I wouldn't bother. XP will use about
1 1/2 X your installed memory by default. You can reduce this, if you want, but leave some pagefile, because some programs look for it.

Disabling Hibernation frees up a lot of room.

Another thing you may want to consider is partitioning your hard drive. Many of us like to keep just XP and a few programs on "C ", and our data on another partition. That way, if something goes awry with XP, your chances of recovering your stuff is much better. Do a search on the board for partitioning- there have been a number of discussions and good points made in all of the threads.

FWIW, XP Pro, Norton IS 03, and a gig of little programs fit in a 3.5 gigs on my C drive. XP likes about 25% of the OS partition to be free, so keep that in mind when you set sizes.

    FarmerJo,

From Norton Ghost 2003, all "one session files" are automatically excluded from the Image.

"One session files" are among others, pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys. See the Ghost manual for a complete list.

    Johanna,

It seems like You missed Steve's thread with a link to Understanding Virtual Memory where it is explained that reducing pagefile size actually destroys XP's strategy.

    LOL :D
I said you could reduce the size of XP's pagefile, I didn't say it was a good idea, or that I would do it!
