I have a problem in Windows XP Professional Installation

When i try upgrading from Windows 98 to Windows XP :-
I start Windows XP Installation and choose upgrade , then i accept the agreement and enter the serial key. Then it shows u an upgrade report where it tells me that my Creative 56K V90 Modem and My HP Scanjet 3400C would have a problem. I have my drivers for the Modem in Windows XP. After this is copies the Installation files int he HDD and restarts. After it restarts its shows a indicator saying Loading Windows XP Setup. After that it says Please Wait and then there is no activity in my HDD nor in my CD Drive. The Computer stops in that screen.

When i try Installing XP ( Fresh Installation ) :-
I start Windows XP Installation and choose Fresh Install , then i accept the agreement and enter the serial key. After this is copies the Installation files int he HDD and restarts. After it restarts it takes me to a Blue Color Screen . It first says press F6 to install SCSI or RAID Drivers. then the screen changes and asks to press F2 for ASR. then it says "Setup is Loading Windows XP ". The screen stops there and there is no activity in my HDD nor in my CD Drive. The Computer stops in that screen.

I have used Windows XP Before in my PC. THis problem started only after i formatted my PC. I installed Windows XP from the same CD.
I also tried installing Windows Whistler RC2 and Windows 2000. The same problem occurs there also.
Please let me know a solution

    Thanks

You say a clean format & install? What ute did you use to format? Don't use the startup win98 disk, instead set you bios to "first device=cdrom, second device=c third device=a save/exit have your winxp in tray. Setup will rebuild a partition & format a non dos table for your winxp. When asked for verify previous windows place win98 cd in tray & point to this location, continue, etc: Now you may have errors on the hard drive so let the setup check for these too. You will never get the thang to work rite if bad sectors show on the hard drive where the OS is to be installed:)

    dos/clean/fresh

Re-reading your first post, fresh install just replaces a botched previous attempt @ install! Clean is to install into a partition w/no other OS installed. You may want to try a dual boot if your drive is large nuf. BTW what is this box we are fix n? Ram, proc, etc? The partition where winxp lives really works best in a "clean" install. This way the tables are adjusted primarily for xp. If you already have win98 on this drive, and want to still upgrade "over" win98, then remove all cards but video & try again :)

    got it

http://www.windowsreinstall.com/indexwinxp.htm This site may have the trick for ya:) The best way I've found when the install hangs is to remove all cards but the video. It seems the install on yours does not get to searching hardware so we have to look for probs on hard drive, in bios, memory free, blah blah

anyone else out there gotta clue?

    hello there
i had asked a friend of mine about the same problem... he told me the following :-

" you have a compressed volume overlay on that disk

i dont care if you format the disk fdisk or use delpart. it will still be there!!!!!

you have to write the disk back to 0's

the easiest way to do so is go to your hard drive manufacture's site and get their utility to do so.

if you cant find the file. call them

Hard drive companies like wd and maxtor will be glad to assist you

when done a write to zeros you hd will be considered recertified so if you are using a win 9x you must fdisk and format in 2000 and xp this will be done for you

as a word of advice if you are using this computer at home use fat 32 as it is way faster in every aspect use ntfs for business caus it is secure and less volnerable to errors "

    ---------

I would like to know what do u mean by writing the disk back to zero ??????/ Will i lose my data if i do so ????
    Please help

    in doubt, try

Maybe but what are we trying to do here? You have already formated & have had win98 & winxp with dual boot on this drive, rite? Your post is copied below.

"I went to MS DOS and formatted my c drive at the command promt " format c: "

then i started my pc with my windows 98 bootable cd and installed windows 98

then after that when i choose upgrade i get the problem i mentioned above "

So can you partition & format this way again? If not boot to A drive with win98 boot disk & select NO CDROM support, now type this at the prompt A:\scandisk when ask to do a thorough surface scan click yes:)

    try install

Well then lets install winxp! Put xp incdrom, bootup & enter Bios. Set first boot device=cdrom second=c save/exit, the setup begins from the cdrom. Winxp will check the disk, partition & format things to suite itself so ta speak. Don't panic give it time to install. If a script pops up about drives not certified say go ahead anyway, xp rules:D

    install xp

Sorry dude, they moved your post to page two. Ah ya know what? Lets see if you can install Win98 on this drive. That would tell us if the winxp cd was maybe bad. You have done this before I know. You don't have a bios overlay I'm sure, so keep us posted on this ok? Your system is not that old & should work just fine.:)

You want to do it the easy way?

You should post your Video card and Mother Board type.
But possibly one or the other isnt on microsoft HCL (Hardware Compatability List). What ever the Case may be an easy work around is get and old video card and install it with that in your computer. Also you probly wiil have to upgrade BIOS. You'll probly end up doing both
uprgrading your BIOS under Win98 wiill be easier.
