Installation of AVG Free 7.1 failed

Hello all!

For the first time, I decided to try AVG Free. I attempted an installation on an older computer, 350 MHz PII, 256 MB RAM and Windows 98SE. AVG Free is said to have a small foot print which was my main reason.

The version was avg71free_362a652.

There was a scan at first boot (and subsequent boots) but nothing worked when Win98 was up and running. There was an error message "could not find the kernel" or something like that.

I have downloaded the most recent version (avg71free_385a721) and will try it tomorrow in combination with Zone Alarm Free.

Anyone else who has made the same experience?

I never had any issues putting avg on win98 or xp either. I suspect that there is a conflict between avg & za on 98. ZA has a LARGE footprint on win98.

 

I didn't proceed to install ZA after the failed installation of AVG. I rolled back using Ghost and installed AVG 7.1 Free, version 385a721 which worked well. I proceeded to install ZoneAlarm 6.1 Free, version 61_74_000 and it too worked well. I don't know what happened the first time ... ... ?
