I am a novice user so please be tolerant with me.
Am trying to download Service Pack 3 for XP Professional via Windows update. When I activate 'download' and accept the licence agreement I get a dialogue box which states 'Preparing Download' and a progress bar. On my first attempt nothing appeared on progess bar at all and on second attempt (with antivirus disabled) the bar came up immediately showing approx one eighth progress. On each occasion there was no further progess and the 'Preparing Download' dialogue just hung for, say hour and half (I'm on Dial-up).
Eventually a message was returned 'Installation Failure' and code 80200010.
Have tried Microsoft Support Pages but Oh !, what a minefield.: Thanks for any suggestions.

That's likely due to your internet connection failing. It's a common problem with dial-up connections, especially if you have any noise on the line.

You can keep reconnecting and starting the download again. It will continue from the point it left off so you'll eventually get it. SP3 will take several hours on dial-up.

I suggest having a friend with a broadband connection download it and make a CD for you.

    Installation Failure

Many thanks for replies. It does indeed look like it's caused by dial-up connection dropping out

If you have a low line level or noise on the line, even when you plug in to the interface box that feeds your house, the phone company will fix that for you at no charge. Any slight noise on the line will affect a modem and often cause it to disconnect. Perform the following procedure to see if your line has noise:

Pick up the phone and dial any number except 0. Once the dial tone is gone you have about 30 seconds to really listen to your phone line (after about 30seconds the line may change to a busy signal). Listen closely to the line and verify you do not hear any pops, bangs, crackles, creaking or faint voices in the background. Any of these noises can cause your modem connection to fail. Repeat the procedure several times since line noise is often intermittent.

If you hear any background noise at all, retest at the interface box outside your house. There is a jack there that you can unplug the house line from and insert the plug from your phone for testing. That eliminates the house wiring from the equation. If the noise is still there, call the phone company for repairs.

    Good luck.

Of course, there is no telling why there is a failure. I failed seven times with the small, and the large download file. Invariably, the failure occurred while installing files, about midway the process. And, I saw that the failure occurred when FXSAPI.dll. No error code was given. The progress just disappeared, and was told that SP3 failed. Then it, sort of, rolled back. I say sort of, because some elements of SP3 appeared to stay installed, and I got a nice, reassuring notice that my XP may not work properly.
I am working with Microsoft tech support, and, so far my issue has been escalated, meaning that they don't have clue.
And, my XP has slowed down, considerably, very common with these updates.

    Hi Westside
Are they working you through trouble shoot via MS Article ID 949377 ?? or have moved past that and trying different suggestions. I was planning on calling them tonight. I've tried all methods in MS article, all failed.

    Westside: You said,
Try going to the MS Update site. In the left-hand panel, click on "Review your update history." A window will open containing your recent attempts. The failed ones display a red ball with a ? beside it. Click on that and you should then see the error code that applies to yours. With that code number you have a better chance of tracking down the right fix.
