    Hi Olivia!

In order to get help as fast as possible, you'll need to give all the details you have about your computer and any details concerning the error message. There can be several reasons for what is happening so the more details you supply the better.

Make of computer===Processor speed===Amount of RAM installed===Hard drive size and freespace available===type of installation disk (Upgrade or full) (Home or Pro)===How far into the installation do you get===Have you checked to see if your equipment is in the compatability list MS has on their site===Have you tried going to PcPitstop.com and taking the XP compatability test to verify you have no problems===and anything else you observe and feel that may help.

Try to see if there is a "Details" button to click when you get that error screen. Report anything related to the error screen so far as text it mentions.

I'm sure someone will be able to help you but let's get the groundwork done first.

    Good luck.

Wow you gotta problem for sure, but you also have patience:)
Follow Zephyr's instructions to a TEE so we can get right to the source, otherwise we all just sorta guess for awhile.

My question to you is "How are you trying these installs "? Are you booting from win98 startup disk? Are you setting the bios to first boot device=cdrom? Are you trying the install from within win98 & selecting UPGRADE or NEW installation? Gotta know:D

    XP just won't cooperate

Since you have tried to upgrade to XP 5x I have one simple question.

Did you run the compatability test option before trying the install.

XP (offically) does not support ANY ISA devices. - If there are ISA devices present - XP will not install untill you open the box AND PULL THEM OUT.

There are some other items which XP does not support - Most Ultra66 IDE controller addin cards for example.

    Run the test.

List your hardware and POST again - There is a way...

    hmmmm

Profgab101 I gotta help ya out here a bit. WinXP has a way of seeing things win95/98 never did. True p-n-p! Many installs of winxp w/ISA devices & yet to stall an install;) Example: super 7 mobo EPOX MVP3-G VIA chipset. USR 55k ISA modem, Microtek 6XL flatbed scanner w/scsi 8bit card (4yrs) Orchid ISA sound card (1995) HP 540c inkjet printer (1995). All installed when loaded winxp. Bingo tada!:) ATA/66 controlers promise & hipoint work just dandy here too! XP finds um up front, that's that beauty of this new O/S

    Win XP & ISA

As to my reason for stating that XP doesn't "Officially" support ISA is the Training materials provided by M$ prior to the XP rollout stated "No Support" (Was required to take an 80 hour training program praising the virtues... before I was "allowed" to support XP.) - and as you said some items will go right in - on some MBD's - BIOS makes all the difference...

Anyone who watches the first part of the XP install (on the DOS type Blue Screen) will see it coping drivers for several items which are ISA - most notably an Adaptec 1540, which is an ISA SCSI controller.

Examples - when loading XP on some systems (READ that as systems shipped in cowmooflage colored boxes...) if the system had a Promise Ultra 66 installed the install will usually fail. Pull the card - it loads flawlessly (on a clean load) (on upgrades there is so much software you have to remove first...what a pain, delete partition and let XP quick format in NTFS 5.1)

Certain ISA modems will cause an endless reboot loop - at a point in the install before you can make any adjustments.
and if you try to install them later... no drivers available, and it redetects on each boot.

Lastly - even if a MBD does not have any ISA slots, it is possible (and likely) that there is an ISA bus on the board, and this must be supported to (indirectly) allow for std KYB & Mouse and floppy functions.

(BTW There was a statement in the M$ training materials for W2k that stated that W2K would not run on non-intel platforms...

    {Don't laugh too hard..} )

    XP & ISA slots

Hey Profgab101 how are things in Colorado?
Been awhile since origin post, eh. No biggy on the isa thang as more & more folks turn to XP they discover "Don't believe everything MS writes "!!
Ya know those "Certain isa modems "? I found a few that just go in with generic "Hayes" drives found on 98se cd, odd, eh?
