Have you ever let it run it's course and see if it tells you what's being installed?

My first thought, if all installed programs are working properly, is a windows update that is failing to completely install. Did you do any about the time this started? Have you tried a system restore prior to when it started? Go to the Windows update site and view installation history. You could also check the event viewer for hints of failed applications. Right click My Computer and select manage. (hope this is one of the XP machines  )

I don't really suspect spyware/malware or virus since they don't normally use the installation wizard, but rule them out too, with Spybot and Ad-aware from the links in my signature, and online virus scans. Make sure to immediately update both Spybot and Ad-aware before running.

    absentmindedJWC,

How about looking at all the programs that start at boot? Look in Programs>startup and in start>run>msconfig under the startup tab.
You can remove any or all in either place without disturbing windows.
Then see if the problem persists.

If it does, let us know what version of windows you're running.
