We recently purchased a new server for our organisation, second-hand. The drive had been re-formatted, and they did not have any of the original CDs for this Machine. We downloaded all the drivers from the manufacturer's website, and were all set to go. However, when selecting the SCSI controller (which is listed by NT), it says that we have to inset "Windows NT setup disc #3" in the CD-ROM drive. As far as I ever knew, there was only one CD for NT installation. If I try (Other), it then asks for the manufacturer's diskette. The machine is an Acer Altos 600, if that's of any use. :-/

Any and all suggestions are welcome, as I have been strugling with this machine for about a month now.

You will need to put the drivers on to a floppy disk, then start the installation process as normal.

When installing from the CD, on the first screen it says something like press F6 or F7 (cannot remember exactly) to install a third party SCSI driver. Press the required key and put the floppy disk with the driver in when prompted. It will then load the driver from the disk instead of trying to use one from the CD.

The NT installation process makes a good guess at trying to identify the SCSI card being used, but isn't always correct. Remember NT4 is over six yeas old now and technology has moved on!

If that doesn't do it, then let us know exactly what SCSI card it is as there might be a special "trick" to getting it installed.

    Simon.

F6 is the key you need to press

Asking for disc 3 may refer to the fact that you can make 3 (or is it 4) boot floppies for NT if your CD drive is non bootable - as already stated NT is pretty old nowadays so this was a good idea at the time.

Once you get the system up and working make sure you get Service Pack 6a on there straight away as a modern driver without the latest service pack may throw up "interesting" results !

Well, I've got through the first portion of the installation process - I can create and format a partition, and copy the files for Winnt. I managed to find the one file I was missing from my set of downlaods for this PC, and unzipped it onto a floppy.

Upon restarting, however, it says that there is no system drive, and says "Insert boot or system disk..." blah blah blah. I have all the other drivers, and the service pack on CD.

AndyO - It is asking for for the disk to be inserted in the CD Drive, otherwise I would be inclined to agree with you. It is important to get this up and running, as we bought it second-hand for about $500 - 3 months ago!!!

Any and all assistance is appreciated

If the NT install has finished OK it may be that the SCSI controller is not set to be the boot device

Try looking in the BIOS to see if you can change the boot order to SCSI first or to SCSI controller <whatever> in Slot <number> first depending on the BIOS.
