I have two machines, one with win98 and the other with win2k prof. I want to put both hard drives onto the win98 machine, but I want to run win 2k. I have the CD and the product key for win 2k; it's "for distribution only with a new pc ". What kind of problems am I likely to encounter? Is this a bad idea?

I was thinking that I'd like to use the current win2k hard drive as the C drive; but I think I still should reinstall win 2k on it.

Any advice or comments will be appreciated. If there's any kind of white paper or tech paper that I should read, please tell me about it.

Tough question since the OEM folks do things in different ways.

First thing I'd try is putting the drive in the case that has 98 now and removing the existing 98 drive. Then give it a try and see how things work. If it boots up OK you probably don't want to mess around with the OS load. You can just put the other drive back in and do with it as you wish. You can even keep 98 and set up for dual boot if you wish.

Note that the above assumes the 2000 load on on C:\ in it's present location. If not, there are three files you will need to put into the root of the drive so it will boot and possibly a tweak to the boot.ini file on the 2000 system.

If it fails to boot up, post back so we can make sure the OEM load is just barking at it's new home/hardware before you start trying more drastic things.
