I had planned to upgrade one of my computers running Windows 98 with XP. Before I could do so the system crashed and it looks like I can't get "98" reinstalled without a disk format.

Does anyone know if I can install XP to a crashed operating system and maintain my files?

You are going to need to try to repair your 98 to retrieve your files. When you install XP, it will wipe everything on its partition during the format. When you say "crashed ", what exactly do you mean? What is (or isn't) happening? Maybe we can help you get your data off of there.
