i have a new Dell XPS 410, has a RAID 0 drive system,
i have a very good 200G HDD from my last system (had an HDD crash and put in a new HDD, but machine became too slow and chip was running at redline even for the simplest operations), my question is this: does anyone know if the exsisting drive has a ribbon cable connection or is it a Dell unique cable connection? i am reluctant to open the box up to just look at the moment.

Check the spec of the Dell - almost certainly running SATA drives. Raid 0 implies two physical drives seen as one by Windows. Cables will be round ones not ribbon if SATA with special miniaturised SATA connectors.

Is your spare hard drive SATA or PATA (EIDE)?

Other things to consider - there may well not be a spare drive bay for another hard drive and if the spare drive is PATA are there Eide connectors on the board?

I'm not a DELL person - build my own, but from what I have read here and elsewhere over the years they are 'different' in many respects to the box you would assemble yourself :)

Think you need to open the case and have a look.

Not aware of any such beast having ever been created for standardized HDD's. Sure, Dell tried to get cute on a few non-standard motherboard connectors but drives weren't included in this. And, for what its worth, Dell machines in general aren't very different, if at all, compared to other computers.

    ;)

Like it or not, you'll need to get a spec sheet on your motherboard or open the case to see if you have any available headers and of what type to accomodate your other drive.

Non-standard power supplies - or is that HP?

And you tend to need a PhD to dismantle an HP case as I recall :)

Try using the service tag. It will tell you how to find it at the support webpage.

    No mention of PATA.

There will be a section (tab) at support "system configuration ". I think this gives a readout of your hardware installation.

    Try starting here:
    http://www.dell.com/content/product...xpsdt_410?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~tab=specstab

Welcome to the spin zone ......... What a creatively misleading way to promote a RAID Mirror. And, on the flip side, think of all the potential misery facing people like chaosm who have Striped systems.

You are right Pete; I was just being my normal optimistic self, trying to de-mystify all this "Dell is Different" dialogue. Both Dell and HP have done some "trick" wiring in the past to thwart do-it-yourselfers.

    ;)
