I would like to insert clipart when using text inside Smart Art. You can see what I am trying to do in the screen shot:

What I want to do, is insert clip art inside (or immediately next to) the text in the text box. Look at the screen shot. I want to move the clip art of the bonds, up into the upper-left corner of the Plus-sign smart art, where the text reads, "Debts of states assumed by national government; all debts paid at face value (instead of market value)." Now is it possible to insert clip art to rest right next to the text? Or is Word treating the entire Smart Art as a single unit, so to speak, that can't be modified like I want to?

    Hi psaulm119,

The layout you have selected in Smart Art does not allow you to do what you want. You would have to change the layout to Basic Block List in order to insert clip art into a text box. Then you can move that text box with the clip art to where you want it. This layout allows you to add additional text boxes as well.

    I hope this helps you.

Thank you very much, Ann. Actually, I went into the Smart Art section and the Basic Block list didn't let me insert graphics, but I experimented and found the Vertical Picture List smart art did (the brief description on the right pane says that the squares on the left side are designed to contain photos.

This whole thing makes it much much easier to arrange various ideas and give them a graphical representation too. This is gonna be a big help--one more reason for me to get used to the Ribbonator.

OK. You can see what my latest version looks like here:

My next problem (and I think it will be my last--famous last words yeah) is that I'd like to convert those blue boxes or whatever they are called, to an outline. In other words, I'd like to have blue or black only around the edges of each of the four boxes. I did a right-click and format shape option, but the only things I could do was either "no fill," which took away everything and made it look like there was nothing but the text I inserted, and the clipart; or the "solid fill," which colored a blue background. Changing the color to white simply gave me the same result as "no fill." I'd like each of these four sections to have a border so that each of the pictures is visually connected with its accompanying text, and the paper doesn't look like a column of four photos and another column of text.

Is there a way I can just make those boxes to have a border--a dark line around the edge, with a transparent or white interior?

Found the answer to my question. For anyone who might search for this info,
right-click on the smart art and select Format Shape. On the left, select Fill and then on the right pane, select No Fill. Then, under Line Color on the left, go to Solid Line on the right pane, and make sure that the color is one that is visible. That will make the "filler" inside the shape, transparent; it will give that shape only an outline perimeter.

Great! I'm glad to hear you were able to do what you wanted to. It takes a bit of probing, but Word is pretty accommodating.

I was able to insert the clip art while using Basic Block list, so I wonder why you were not??? But, no matter, you got it done.
