The default operation of the INSERT key on my keyboard performs an over write. I would like to change this default to an insert operation. How is the default for the INSERT key changed? (If it is in the BIOS I'll be damned if I can find it.)

The Insert key functions like a toggle switch. Press it once to change from overwrite to insert, press it again to toggle back to overwrite.

Generally, when you toggle it to Insert, it will remain on insert until it's pressed again to toggle to overwrite.

Or is the problem that it's set to insert but when you reboot, it has reverted to overwrite?

I hit that darned Insert key by accident all the time when I want Backspace. They should have put it elsewhere. I always enjoy  looking up from my hunting and pecking to find that half of what I have already written has been obliterated by an accidental tap on Insert.

Jim - you can relocate the Insert Key...

    KeyTweak Homepage

Keytweak is a free keyboard remapper for Windows NT/2000/XP. It makes use of Microsoft's Scancode Map registry key to remap your keyboard. VB6 Runtime files are required, but are already present on Windows 2000/XP.

I use this neat little app to make a second F7 key. (i replace the right ALT key)

    Thanks for your resposne.
I understand the toggle action of the insert key. In answer to your question, when I reboot it does revert back to the overwrite mode. I want it to be in the insert mode when I boot up. In fact I think I just might want it always in the insert mode.

David Favin--On my PC, the setting for Insert on reboot remains whereever I left it before rebooting. (Or possibly back to Insert if I left it in Overwrite. I have not tested that.) I agree, though, it would be good to be able to turn the toggle off. Do not believe I ever saw a fix for this, though I believe some programs do not allow the Insert key to toggle at all. Unfortunately IE and OE are not among them. :)

    LOL!!!
    Dittohere.
At xmas I got a laptop which is my main used computer now. I was thrilled that the isert key on the laptop is not next to the backspace key. BUT, it's next to the spacebar, and sometimes during my nimble hunt&pecks I will get fancy and use my left thumb for the space bar and hit that darned insert key.
