I know some manufacturers use chips in the ink cartridges to render them useless once empty of ink but my question is how do they do it? I am thinking that the software will write a value into the firmware of the chip that tells the printer it is empty.

Some ink refill manufacturers can get round the chipped cartridges. For instance, this one in England allows the refilling of Epson cartridges www.jrinkjet.co.uk
