Infostealer.Gampass and Norton

Can someone out there help me with this ? I have done everything I can think of, and that's not too much, to get rid of this virus? and I am now lost. I had norton running and it showed as Infostealer.Gampass and then would say it was removed. I think it's still there. How can remove the sucker??? All help is greatly appreciated.

What have you done thus far to remove the infection? Any special tools or scanners? And also where does Norton say the infection is located, as in the file path\folder?

Let us know. In the mean time, lets get a couple of anti-spyware scans and a HijackThis log file. Please do as instructed below in the order presented.

For ease in troubleshooting the HijackThis logs and because some spyware can be easily removed, it's a good idea to first run a good spyware removal program, such as Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy. They need to be updated with their latest reference files before running. Reboot after use to let them remove what they find. This also gives the next app, a 'clean' look at your machine.

Spybot Search & Destroy v1.4

With AdAware and Spybot: DL, check for updates, then scan, repair/remove/quarantine anything found. Reboot before next scan with whichever app is next. The reason for running these apps, is to clean up some of the other 'crapware' on your pc, which, in turn, will make deciphering your HJT log, easier.


Then download HijackThis! SetUp from here. Save the file to your desktop.

Double-click the HijackThis! SetUp icon to begin the installation. Follow the prompts for the default install location of:'C:\Program Files\HijackThis'. Tick the 'Create a desktop' button when the option appears. Select next, then allow HijackThis! to start.

Then press the [Scan] button. You will notice the [Scan] button will turn into a [Save Log] button. Click the [Save Log] button and notepad will open up with the contents of the scan. Right-click in the saved log, and select 'copy'. Then proceed to your original thread, unless otherwise instructed and click the '[Reply]' button and paste the saved contents to be reviewed. Do not make any modifications to the log or perform any 'fixes' until told to do so.

 

I scanned with adaware and spybot and here is the HJT logfile. I forgot to mention I uninstalled Norton and installed Kaspersky AV. Thought it might help but Kasp cant find anything.

Perhaps you overlooked that part of my previous message.


And somehow HJT did not get installed properly or you had previously installed it, and it needs to be moved.

Please follow these instructions, exactly, for proper HJT installation. Please place HJT into ITS OWN PERMANANT FOLDER. It must not be installed on the desktop nor in any temp folders.

You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. Move HijackThis.exe into this folder (C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe). When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.


Nothing real obvious in the log, aside from the notification from your av, any other problems to report?

Lets fix some minor items, which are nit-picks and some others I'm not 100% sure about. those would be the ActiveX which will install again on from the sites as you visit them.

Access your Add or Remove Programs Control Panel by hitting your [Start] button, select Control Panel and click on Add or Remove Programs. Then find the following programs and click the [Change|Remove] button for each, if they are listed. If they are not, continue with instructions

Open Hijackthis, select the [Do a system scan only] button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes [] next to them and press the [Fix Checked] button. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, nor any other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

Ok, so just to be clear, you're no longer getting the alert of the InfoStealer\Gamepass infection? Let me know.

And I must apologize as I overlooked one item in your log and I know I saw it, but somehow forgot to include that part of the fix.

Go to: Start > Run > type " services.msc ", then click OK

When the Services window appears scroll down to the Boonty Games service.

Click it to highlight it, then <right-click> and select: Properties
Select and set "Service Status" option to "Stop"
Select: "Startup type" and set it to "Disabled ", click Apply, then OK.


Run HJT, and place a check next to the following lines, then, with all browsers and windows closed, hit 'Fix checked':

We have 3 more things to do, mostly maintenance and then our recommendations:

Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp folder
The app below will help with temp files.

Also, delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion. It is very rare that anything significant is ever found.

To further prevent the installation of ad/mal/spyware, DL the apps below, which are just as good the fight against ad/mal/spyware as AdAware & Spybot S&D:

SpywareBlaster
With SpywareBlaster v3.5.1 , just DL, install and check for updates, enable Internet Explorer protection, and your done! I don't recommend using IE restricted sites protection as it's not a very large database. Use IE-SPYADs below.

To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine install WinPatrol v10.0.5.

Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.
