    Welcome to WindowsBBS sgtom :)

My first thought would be through the use of a P2P file sharing app, such as uTorrent. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

References for the risk of these programs are here,
    here and here.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall them, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

Now, lets see if we can nuke this infection. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) from here or here and save the file to your desktop.

Double click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select 'Perform Quick Scan', then click Scan.
    • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note below)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Post the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

    Hi sgtom!

You did post a reply but it got put on hold for approval by a moderator. The reason is that it contained a link and you have less than ten posts ... ... the WindowsBBS way of fighting spammers.

I deleted the unintentional double post.

Operating System not found is not good. It basically means the BIOS is not seeing the hard drive, the hard drive has failed or the MBR is corrupted. Please see here for more information.

You should first verify that the hard drive is detected in the BIOS. Accessing the BIOS is generally accomplished by tapping the correct button when the computer is powered on. The BIOS screen will often display the correct button, something like 'Press Delete to enter Setup', or 'F2 to enter Setup', etc. Common buttons are Delete, F2 and Enter. You can likely find more specific instructions for accessing and navigating the BIOS at the computer manufacturer's website.

If the drive is indeed detected, you should try the fixmbr command in the Recovery Console (Method 2 in the link above). More detailed instructions for using the Recovery Console can be found in the link on that page. If the drive is not detected, you should try removing and reseating the power connector and ribbon cable connector on the hard drive, and the ribbon cale on the hard drive's motherboard connector.

Plus WinPatrol has detected a change to:

A change was made to use the following program for this file type.

    Registry Editor
    regedit.exe %1 %*

    Is the change ok?

    And this:

Program currently associated with this file type is:

    %1 /S

A change was made to use the following program for this file type.

Do you have any odea what this is about?

Highlight and copy the bolded command below.

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft
    • Click Start>Run and paste the command in, then hit enter.
    • An interface of Deckards file association fix will open.
    • Click Scan.
    • .reg should come up in the list.
    • Check the box next to it, then click Fix.
    • Exit when complete.

Download ComboFix by sUBs from here, saving the file to your desktop.

Please disable realtime protection applications as they sometime interfere with the tool. Check this link for your applicable programs.

    • Close all open programs and windows
    • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
    • It may reboot your computer and resume running when you logon. Wait for it to complete. When finished, it will open a log for you. Post that log and a new HijackThis log in your next reply.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Not sure how long it will be until he is available to respond, so lets just get things working again. Two choices here. ComboFix caused Windows to create a System Restore point prior to making any changes. ComboFix also created another backup of the registry using Erunt. Lets roll back using one of those backups .... whichever you decide.

    1. Click Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.
    • Select Restore my computer to an earlier time then click Next
    • Select the restore point made by ComboFix on 04-12-2008 at approximately 10:50 then click Next
    • Follow the prompts
    2. Navigate to and double click C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\Hiv-backup\erdnt.exe then reboot when prompted (or when it completes if not prompted).

    Tom,

We need to get a look at some backup files created by ComboFix for the developer. Please post the contents of all files in the C:\QooBox\Quarantine\Registry_backups folder. You should be able to open them with notepad.

    Thanks!

Thanks Tom! Not sure what you're referring to 'fixmbr command in the Recovery Console' thing. Are you talking about the warning in the ComboFix log?
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!

The Recovery Console is a command line utility used for attempting to recover a system that will not boot. It is available from the XP Operating System cd if not installed.

ComboFix has already been updated, so please delete the copy of ComboFix.exe you currently have. Download ComboFix by sUBs from here, saving the file to your desktop.

If you do not have an XP SP2 cd (an Operating System disc, not a Recovery cd), I recommend you first install the Recovery Console as outlined below.

    Install the Recovery Console

Download the installation package Setup Disks for Floppy Boot Install from Microsoft so that it can be used to install the Recovery Console on your computer. No validation required! Please select the download link below that's appropriate for your Operating System, then download and save the setup package to your desktop. If necessary, change the language version to match your installation. Do NOT change the name of the downloaded file!
Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. It should appear similar to the below text.

    WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Pro-BootDisk-ENU.exe
    [boot loader]
    timeout=2
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT= "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

Please make sure the bolded red line above is present. Also that the disk, rdisk and partition numbers (in paranthesis), while possibly different than shown above, have values where the default entry matches the Operating System entry where bolded. I've colored those numbers above for effect. If the log does not appear similar, please do not proceed with anything below, but post the log here and wait for further instruction.

If you do have an XP SP2 cd (an Operating System disc, not a Recovery cd), or the Recovery Console was succesfully installed, you can proceed as follows:

Please disable realtime protection applications as they sometime interfere with the tool. Check this link for your applicable programs.

    • Close all open programs and windows
    • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
    • It may reboot your computer and resume running when you logon. Wait for it to complete. When finished, it will open a log for you. Post that log and a new HijackThis log in your next reply.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
