I was given as a present a WD My Cloud 3TB boxed sealed. Instructions shown on the outside of the package box, connections are by router, Ethernet cable. Can I use this HD connected only to the USB port? as I do not have a router. Help will be most appreciated.

Looks like you answered your own question;)

When I GOOGLED the drive I found:

A few things to know up front:

    1. This device cannot be plugged into a computer for use.
    2. It needs a hard wired ethernet connection - it cannot connect to your network wirelessly.

Steve, thanks for comments. There is no indication printed to say that USB connection was not applicable, so how does one find out?. Over the years, I have bought several HD, from various manufacturers, none that could not be connected to the USB and not function. Technology moves very fast indeed, and this case proves it. WD MY Cloud is a case in point.

A "CLOUD" drive is just that... When hooked up via the Ethernet cable it'll be assigned an IP address and can be accessed by computers all over your house..

Sounds like you've left it all sealed up....Just swap it out for a standard USB version.

Steve, I will certainly take it back to PCWorld, they should have warned of the HD not being compatible with USB connection. They certainly said some HD were compatible only with Macs. I read several reviews on Seagate and WD, WD appears to be the favourite with a high score. What is your view?

The USB connection is for adding more storage if needed or for sharing USB pen drives.

Why would they warn you? They might not of made the sale. I agree that the salesperson should of asked what you were going to do and recommended what they have and how they work.

    Mr Bill,
PCWorld sales person, still maintains My Cloud was just like any other HD for installing. I agree PCWorld does not require to give any information on any item that they sell, customer is responsible for their purchase, not a very good attitude to take between retailer and customer..

Got to agree with you Bobby. They are not alone in doing this. That is the world we live in today with the younger generation (most of them anyways) just wanting a paycheck and take no pride in their work or customer service. Wanting $15.00 an hour to put a pickle on a hamburger and then get it half on and half off the bun. :)

To be fair: who in the world doesn't have a router these days?

    Bobby,

I know this one is marked "Resolved" but thought I would add one comment. I too was unaware that the "Cloud" external storage units were not directly accessible to a PC so thanks for posting your problem. I use a Cisco media bridge so I would be able to use one via an ethernet port so I have no problem with that. However, it's good information to know because I will soon be looking at another external storage route and I wouldn't want to get a surprise in my purchase.

Virginia, thank you for your posting, it was most gratifying to read that another member was unaware of "My Cloud" not being accessible with a normal desktop external HD.
