Is Defender an upgrade to MES. IS Defender a Malware/Spy Catcher only or does it include Antivirus protection. I realise that MES and Defender can not be installed together. In Windows 8.1. apparently Defender is the default antivirus protection.

Thank you for clarifying what appeared to be misleading. Defender only works with Windows 8/8.1. as Antivirus.

Sorry for not reading your quote properly. It certainly appears not to work in Windows 7 and Vista as Antivirus, or I am reading incorrectly again? Thanks Bobby.

Windows Defender is built into Windows 8 - it is not compatible with Windows 7 or Vista, for those OS's Microsoft's offering is Microsoft Security Essentials See the link for a comparison between Defender & MSE.
